AllianceBernstein Third-Quarter GAAP Operating Income Falls 12%

Third-quarter 2026 GAAP net revenues rose 7.8% to $1.23 billion, while adjusted net income and the cash distribution rose 2.3% from a year earlier to $0.88 a Unit. Institutional net inflows reached $15.7 billion.

AllianceBernstein Holding L.P. (AB) reported GAAP net revenues of $1.23 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up 7.8% from a year earlier, while GAAP operating income fell 12% to $250 million. The firm generated $6.6 billion of firmwide net inflows, the strongest quarterly flow result in four years, after $0.8 billion of net inflows in the second quarter and net outflows of $2.3 billion a year earlier.

Chief Executive Officer Seth Bernstein said the result represented an annualized organic growth rate of approximately 3%, led by institutional demand across liquid and illiquid credit. Alternatives/multi-asset solutions generated $15.0 billion of net inflows, including the onboarding of roughly $12 billion of commercial mortgage loans the firm had highlighted the prior quarter, marking a seventh consecutive quarter of organic growth for the asset class. Private markets AUM reached $105 billion, up 33% year-over-year and surpassing the upper end of the firm’s 2027 target range, Bernstein said.

The institutional channel produced $15.7 billion of net inflows, compared with $0.6 billion in the second quarter. Institutional gross sales rose to $21.5 billion from $8.3 billion. The pipeline of awarded but unfunded institutional mandates fell to $13.1 billion at September 30 from $25.8 billion at June 30, which the company said reflected an accelerated pace of deployments. Bernstein said the pipeline did not include any of the $100 billion from CRBG.

Retail flipped to $8.4 billion of net outflows from $0.9 billion of net inflows in the second quarter. Retail gross sales fell to $20.0 billion from $31.0 billion. The company said continued pressure in active equities and rate-sensitive redemptions from taxable fixed income more than offset positive net flows into alternatives/multi-asset and tax-exempt. Private Wealth recorded $0.7 billion of net outflows, unchanged from the second quarter.

Active equity outflows of roughly $13 billion continued to weigh on flows, after roughly $11 billion of active equity outflows in the second quarter. Passive equity attracted $2.5 billion of net inflows from institutional and private wealth clients. Tax-exempt fixed income generated $1.6 billion of net inflows amid a turbulent municipal market, while taxable fixed income was modestly positive at $0.3 billion, as strong institutional inflows more than offset retail redemptions.

Ending assets under management were $900.4 billion, down $5.1 billion, or 1%, from a record $905.5 billion at June 30. Average AUM was $908.3 billion, up 3.1% sequentially. Investment performance reduced AUM by $11.7 billion in the quarter.

GAAP net revenues were $1.23 billion, up 4.7% sequentially, on higher performance-based fees and investment advisory base fees, partially offset by lower distribution revenues and higher investment losses. GAAP operating income fell to $250 million from $289 million, and the GAAP operating margin compressed 130 basis points to 21.9%. Operating expenses of $976 million rose 11% sequentially, primarily on higher employee compensation and benefits and general and administrative expense.

Adjusted net revenues were $904 million, up 1.9% sequentially. Adjusted operating income rose 3.3% to $303 million, and the adjusted operating margin expanded 50 basis points to 33.5%. Adjusted net income and the cash distribution were $0.88 a Unit, up 2.3% from $0.86 a year earlier. GAAP net income was $0.79 a Unit. The $0.88 distribution is payable November 19, 2026, to holders of record on November 6.

AB Holding purchased or retained 1.1 million units for $38.4 million in the three months ended September 30, including open-market purchases of 1.0 million units for $38.3 million. Retained units fulfilled employee tax withholding requirements. Headcount was 4,416 employees at quarter-end.

Bernstein said the firm continued to execute across insurance, private markets, SMAs and ETFs, and that as it strengthens that flywheel, deepens strategic partnerships and maintains expense discipline, it believes AB is well positioned to deliver durable organic growth and long-term value for clients and unitholders.
