Cenovus Energy Reports Record Upstream Production in Third Quarter

The integrated energy company generated C$5.0 billion of adjusted funds flow for the period ended September 30, 2026

Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), an integrated energy company with production in Canada and the Asia Pacific region, reported adjusted funds flow of C$5.0 billion for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. The company generated free funds flow of C$3.6 billion and net earnings of C$3.4 billion, or C$1.83 a share.

Total revenues for the quarter were C$16.0 billion, a decrease from C$17.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Upstream revenues fell to C$10.6 billion from C$12.6 billion in the previous quarter, while downstream revenues rose to C$8.6 billion from C$8.2 billion. The company's overall operating margin was C$6.3 billion, up from C$5.9 billion in the prior quarter.

Upstream operations reached a record quarterly production of 1,024 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOE/d), an increase of over 50 MBOE/d from the second quarter. This included record quarterly oil sands production of 833 MBOE/d. Specifically, Foster Creek production reached a quarterly record of 248 Mbbls/d, up from 215 Mbbls/d in the prior quarter. Oil sands operating costs decreased by over C$0.50/bbl from the second quarter to C$10.23/bbl.

Downstream operating margin rose to C$1.8 billion from C$1.0 billion in the prior quarter, which the company attributed to improved market crack spreads and strong operations. The U.S. refining segment operating margin was C$1.4 billion, a figure that included small refinery exemption waivers related to the Superior Refinery and a C$30 million inventory holding loss.

In the U.S. refining segment, the adjusted refining margin was C$55.52 per barrel, compared with C$29.83 per barrel in the second quarter. The company reported an adjusted market capture of 88%, up from 67% in the previous quarter. Total processed inputs for the period were 338.6 Mbbls/d, down from 372.9 Mbbls/d in the second quarter.

Cenovus returned C$1.9 billion to shareholders during the third quarter, consisting of C$1.5 billion in common share repurchases and C$403 million in common share dividends. Net debt stood at C$3.0 billion at the end of the quarter, down from C$5.4 billion in the second quarter.

In October, the company entered into a definitive arrangement agreement to acquire Athabasca Oil Corporation. The acquisition is expected to close in December 2026 and will add approximately 45 Mbbls/d of estimated 2026 year-end exit bitumen production and 1.3 billion BOE of proved plus probable reserves.
