GATX Lifts 2026 Outlook After Rail Profit Jump

Third-quarter diluted earnings were $2.92 a share, and the company now expects full-year results to modestly exceed the high end of its prior $9.90–$10.30 range.

GATX Corporation (GATX), the Chicago-based lessor of railcars, aircraft spare engines and tank containers, reported third-quarter net income attributable to GATX of $105.2 million, or $2.92 a share, compared with $82.2 million, or $2.25 a share, a year earlier.

The company said it now expects 2026 full-year earnings to modestly exceed the high end of its previously announced range of $9.90 to $10.30 a share, citing year-to-date performance and the outlook for the rest of the year. That guidance excludes Tax Adjustments and Other Items.

President and Chief Executive Officer Robert C. Lyons said the outlook reflects positive dynamics across the global businesses, benefits from the acquisition of Wells Fargo’s rail assets and related portfolio management, and strong performance at Engine Leasing.

Rail North America was the main swing. Segment profit rose to $121.3 million from $70.7 million in the third quarter of 2025. The company said higher third-quarter results were driven by higher lease revenues, increased management fee revenue from the Brookfield-owned finance lease portfolio, and higher net gains on asset dispositions, partly offset by higher interest, depreciation and maintenance expenses.

Total revenues were $598.0 million, up from $439.3 million a year earlier, with lease revenue of $514.2 million. Consolidated net gains on asset dispositions were $51.7 million in the quarter.

Fleet utilization at Rail North America, excluding boxcars, was 98.4% at Sept. 30, 2026, compared with 98.0% at the end of the prior quarter. The Lease Price Index renewal rate change, which covers the North American fleet excluding boxcars, slowed to 12.4% from 16.8% in the second quarter. Average renewal term for cars included in the LPI shortened to 52 months from 54 months. Renewal success rate, excluding boxcars, improved to 86.1% from 82.6%. Lyons said rail traffic is stable or modestly growing for most commodities, industry attrition continues, and new-car supply is limited.

The fleet totaled approximately 199,100 cars, including about 9,000 boxcars. Rail North America investment volume was $109.3 million in the third quarter.

Rail International segment profit was $35.9 million, compared with $34.4 million a year earlier. The company said higher third-quarter profit was driven primarily by more railcars on lease. GATX Rail Europe’s fleet of about 36,700 cars was 96.1% utilized, up from 95.3% at the end of the prior quarter. Rail India’s fleet of more than 12,900 cars remained fully utilized. Rail International investment volume was $49.3 million.

Engine Leasing segment profit was $51.4 million, down from $60.4 million a year earlier. The 2025 third-quarter result included a net positive impact of $10.9 million ($8.2 million after tax) from Tax Adjustments and Other Items. Excluding those items, the company said third-quarter results exceeded the prior-year period, driven primarily by higher operating and remarketing income at the Rolls-Royce and Partners Finance affiliates. RRPF’s portfolio, 50% of which is owned by GATX, consisted of 475 aircraft engines at Sept. 30; the wholly owned engine portfolio had 46 engines. Lyons said RRPF investment volume was approaching $1.0 billion year to date.

Companywide investment volume was $171.7 million in the third quarter and totaled more than $4.8 billion year to date. Recourse leverage was 3.3 times at Sept. 30, unchanged from June 30.

The company said it will continue to monitor geopolitical developments and broader industry conditions. Lyons said GATX remains confident in the long-term outlook for the business.
