Federal Signal Orders Accelerate as Specialty Equipment Leads

Third-quarter net sales were $655.5 million as Environmental Solutions orders rose 43% to $529.7 million.

Federal Signal Corporation (FSS), a global maker of maintenance vehicles and public-safety equipment, reported net sales of $655.5 million for the three months ended September 30, 2026, up 18% from a year earlier. The company said the increase was primarily due to the effects of acquisitions and pricing actions.

That year-over-year sales pace was slower than the 19% increase recorded in the three months ended June 30, 2026. Orders, however, moved the other way. Total orders were $620.1 million, up 33% from the year-ago quarter, after an 18% year-over-year increase in the prior quarter.

The Environmental Solutions Group accounted for most of both the sales and the order acceleration. Segment net sales were $563.8 million, up 21% from a year earlier. The company attributed the increase primarily to other specialty equipment, aftermarket offerings, and dump truck bodies and trailers. U.S. sales rose $92.5 million, with other specialty equipment up $74.9 million on higher refuse-truck sales tied to the New Way acquisition and higher metal-extraction support equipment partially due to the Mega acquisition. Aftermarket sales rose $17.1 million and dump truck bodies and trailers $6.0 million, partly offset by a $5.5 million decline in vacuum trucks. Non-U.S. sales rose $5.8 million.

Environmental Solutions orders were $529.7 million, up 43% from the year-ago quarter. U.S. orders rose $135.9 million, including $78.7 million in other specialty equipment, $37.5 million in vacuum trucks, and $23.0 million in aftermarket offerings. Non-U.S. orders rose $22.7 million. Segment operating income was $101.4 million, with operating margin of 18.0%. Gross profit margin in the group was 26.4%. The company said the margin improvement was primarily due to favorable sales mix and pricing, partly offset by higher material costs.

Safety and Security Systems net sales were $91.7 million, up 2% from a year earlier, after a 10% year-over-year increase in the prior quarter. Industrial signaling equipment sales rose $2.8 million, partly offset by a $0.6 million reduction in warning systems. Segment operating income was $22.8 million and operating margin was 24.9%. Orders in the group were $90.4 million, down 6% from a year earlier.

Consolidated operating income was $111.4 million, up 19% from the year-ago quarter. Operating margin was 17.0%. Gross profit was $189.2 million; gross profit margin was 28.9%. Selling, engineering, general and administrative expenses were $69.8 million, or 10.6% of net sales. Amortization expense was $6.8 million. Acquisition and integration-related expenses, net, were $1.2 million.

Net income was $79.6 million, or $1.29 a share, compared with $68.1 million, or $1.11 a share, a year earlier. Income before income taxes was $105.1 million. Interest expense, net, was $5.3 million. The effective tax rate was 24.3%.

Consolidated backlog was $966.6 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $992.0 million a year earlier. Environmental Solutions backlog was $901.2 million and Safety and Security Systems backlog was $65.4 million. The company said it operated 22 principal U.S. manufacturing facilities, three in Canada, two in Europe, and one in South Africa.
