Samsung Biologics expands into next-generation medicines
The company reported a 69.9% capacity utilization rate for the first half of 2026.
The contract development and manufacturing organization Samsung Biologics is diversifying its portfolio into next-generation biopharmaceuticals, including mRNA, antibody-drug conjugates, and cell and gene therapies. The company began operating mRNA production facilities in 2022 and started its antibody-drug conjugate production facilities in March 2025. It plans to establish additional antibody-drug conjugate DP lines and pre-filled syringe mother lines by 2027.
To further broaden its reach, the company launched the Samsung Organoid business in June 2025, moving beyond manufacturing into research services. It also uses a life science fund to make strategic investments in the cell and gene therapy sector to secure technology and market position.
Operational shifts include a transition to a pure manufacturing model. In November 2025, the company completed a spin-off of subsidiaries, including Samsung Bioepis, to establish Samsung Epis Holdings. The company said this move was intended to resolve conflicts of interest with the biosimilar business and strengthen independent decision-making.
Global infrastructure has also expanded through the acquisition of Human Genome Sciences, Inc., a subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline. The company signed the agreement for the 100% stake in December 2025 and finished the acquisition process in March 2026. This provided the company with production facilities in Maryland, USA.
Sales distribution for the first half of 2026 showed that Europe accounted for 59.3% of revenue, followed by the United States at 23.1% and South Korea at 16.7%. The company is continuing to expand its sales network, having opened offices in New Jersey in March 2023 and Tokyo in 2025. It plans to open a European sales office in Amsterdam in 2026.
Production efficiency varied over the last three periods, with the utilization rate moving from 75.2% in 2024 to 70.9% in 2025 and 69.9% in the first half of 2026. The company maintains a large-scale capacity and is currently the largest among global peers with over 300,000 liters of capacity.
Looking forward, the company is developing its second bio campus, which includes plans for plants 5 through 8 by 2032. Plant 5 was completed in April 2025 and is currently operational.
