HMM expands fleet and plans 3.64 trillion won investment
The shipping company plans to invest 3.64 trillion won in the current half-year period.
The comprehensive shipping and logistics provider HMM added 14 vessels to its fleet during the first half of 2026. These additions included container ships, bulk carriers, gas carriers, and car carriers. As of June 30, 2026, the company operated 123 vessels, consisting of 50 bulk carriers and 73 container ships.
The company plans to invest 3.64 trillion won during the current half-year period. This total includes 3.45 trillion won for the container and bulk segments to improve competitiveness through vessel and eco-friendly equipment investments. HMM also plans to allocate 189.5 billion won to other sectors, including port terminal information technology and facility investments. The company noted that these investment amounts may be adjusted based on conditions and are not reasonably predictable.
Consolidated financial liabilities increased over the prior year end. Total liabilities reached 7.82 trillion won at the end of the current half-year, compared to 6.57 trillion won at the end of the previous year. Lease liabilities grew to 6.25 trillion won from 5.39 trillion won. Borrowings also rose to 330.2 billion won from 222.8 billion won.
HMM maintains several financial guarantees and funding obligations. The company has a funding obligation limit of 40 billion won related to Busan Container Terminal. It also faces a maximum potential burden of 118.7 billion won under an equity purchase agreement for HMM PSA Shin Port. Additionally, the company provides financial guarantees for the ship financing of its joint venture, HMMB Int Shipping Pte. Ltd., with a maximum exposure of 190.6 million USD.
Ownership of the company remains concentrated among state-linked entities. As of the end of the current half-year, the Korea Development Bank and the Korea Ocean Business Corporation held stakes of 35.42% and 35.08% respectively. The company's capital stood at 5.13 trillion won at the end of the period.
