Group 1 Automotive to Acquire Hennessy Automobile Companies in Asset Purchase

The acquisition is designed to expand the company's footprint in the Atlanta market to enhance operational efficiency.

Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (GPI) agreed to acquire Hennessy Automobile Companies in an asset-purchase transaction.

The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory and OEM approvals as well as other customary closing conditions.

The acquisition is intended to significantly expand Group 1 Automotive's presence in the growing Atlanta market and create new opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and deliver attractive, long-term returns.

“Building on a strategy we have executed successfully across our largest markets, including Houston and Boston, this acquisition significantly expands our presence in the growing Atlanta market and creates new opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and deliver attractive, long-term returns,” Daryl Kenningham, President and Chief Executive Officer of Group 1 Automotive, said.

The move follows a broader trend of consolidation within the U.S. automotive retail sector. In 2025, Asbury Automotive Group (ABG) completed the acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies, a flagship New England operator, for an aggregate net purchase price of $1.45 billion.
