eBay to Buy Depop in $1.4 Billion All-Cash Deal
The sale would let Etsy concentrate its resources on sustainable growth for its core marketplace.
eBay Inc. (EBAY) agreed to acquire Depop from Etsy Inc. (ETSY) for approximately $1.4 billion in an all-cash transaction, giving the online-commerce company control of a fashion-resale marketplace built around younger consumers. The transaction was expected to close July 30, 2026.
For Etsy, the divestiture would narrow the company’s operations around its namesake marketplace and allow management to focus exclusively on driving sustainable long-term growth there, the company said. The transaction also separates Depop from a portfolio in which the marketplaces had operated independently while sharing expertise in product development, marketing, technology and customer support.
“This transaction allows us to move forward with a clear focus on building the best marketplace for Etsy's buyers and sellers, and is a strong outcome for our shareholders,” Etsy Chief Executive Kruti Patel Goyal said.
Depop operates a mobile-first marketplace where consumers buy and sell secondhand fashion. The business entered 2026 with seven million active buyers, nearly 90% of them under age 34, and more than three million active sellers. Its 2025 gross merchandise sales were approximately $1 billion, including nearly 60% growth in the U.S., giving eBay a larger foothold among Gen Z and millennial shoppers and in the expanding recommerce market.
The acquisition would complement eBay’s existing consumer-to-consumer fashion business, which generated more than $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume in 2025. eBay previously said Depop could benefit from its global reach, financial services and shipping capabilities, as well as programs such as Authenticity Guarantee. The companies also identified cross-listing as a way to expose Depop inventory to more buyers while preserving the marketplace’s name, platform and community.
The sale followed Etsy’s 2025 divestiture of Reverb, the musical-instrument marketplace, and continued the company’s move toward a simpler operating structure centered on Etsy. The company had said it planned to use Depop proceeds for general corporate purposes, continued share repurchases and investment in its core marketplace. With Depop moving to an owner seeking to expand in fashion resale, Etsy’s next phase will depend more directly on whether its product and marketing initiatives can produce durable growth among buyers and sellers.
