Tredegar Posts Loss as Extrusions Profit Collapses

Consolidated EBITDA from ongoing operations fell to $4.1 million in the third quarter as Aluminum Extrusions EBITDA dropped to $2.5 million.

Tredegar Corporation (TG), the aluminum extrusions and specialty films maker, swung to a net loss from continuing operations of $(2.8) million, or $(0.08) a share, in the third quarter of 2026, from net income of $7.1 million, or $0.20 a share, a year earlier.

The reversal followed second-quarter net income of $6.0 million, or $0.17 a share. Net income from ongoing operations, which excludes special items, was a loss of $(1.4) million, or $(0.04) a share, compared with $9.2 million, or $0.26 a share, in the third quarter of 2025. Consolidated EBITDA from ongoing operations dropped to $4.1 million from $18.1 million a year earlier and from $14.2 million in the second quarter of 2026.

Aluminum Extrusions, also called Bonnell Aluminum, accounted for most of the decline. EBITDA from ongoing operations in the segment collapsed to $2.5 million from $16.8 million a year earlier, after $14.5 million in the second quarter of 2026. High Performance Films EBITDA from ongoing operations fell to $4.6 million from $7.2 million a year earlier, after $5.8 million in the second quarter.

President and chief executive officer Dr. Arijit (Bapi) DasGupta said third-quarter results “were not where we want them to be,” citing broader market pressures and execution gaps. At Bonnell, he said, profitability was significantly affected by lower shipments amid continued pressure on building and construction demand, as well as the timing lag of the pass-through of metal costs.

Aluminum Extrusions net sales rose 9.1% to $177.3 million on the pass-through of higher metal costs, while sales volume fell 11.6% to 36.5 million pounds. Volume also declined 4.7% versus the second quarter of 2026. Nonresidential building and construction volume, about 51% of total volume, decreased 14%. Consumer durables volume decreased 22% and automotive and transportation volume declined 17%. TSLOTS shipments increased 48%.

EBITDA from ongoing operations in Aluminum Extrusions decreased $14.3 million versus the third quarter of 2025, including a $13.1 million contribution-margin decline. The company attributed that decline to lower volume, higher labor rates, unfavorable labor productivity from a more labor-intensive mix, higher maintenance on down equipment and higher freight, partially offset by favorable pricing and mix and favorable manufacturing costs tied to casting and scrap. A FIFO aluminum cost-timing charge of $2.8 million compared with a $4.3 million benefit a year earlier also reduced contribution margin.

High Performance Films net sales decreased 8.1% to $23.8 million on lower volume and unfavorable mix, with sales volume down 13.4% to 8.4 million pounds. Surface Protection sales volume decreased 18.6%, which the company tied to weakened consumer electronics display demand and inventory corrections. Advanced packaging films volume decreased 6.8%. Segment EBITDA from ongoing operations decreased $2.6 million versus the third quarter of 2025, with a $3.3 million Surface Protection contribution-margin decline and a $0.7 million increase from advanced packaging films.

The company said High Performance Films EBITDA from ongoing operations has normalized to approximately $5.0 million per quarter despite quarterly volatility since the first quarter of 2022. Memory-chip market pressures, it said, may continue to affect customers’ production levels and the films product mix through the remainder of 2026.

Open orders at Aluminum Extrusions were 24 million pounds at the end of the third quarter of 2026, versus 19 million pounds a year earlier. Net new orders averaged 2.8 million pounds per week. Conflict-driven disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz beginning in March 2026 have constrained shipments and raised costs, the company said, contributing to historically low U.S. aluminum inventories. Through the remainder of 2026 it said it has secured nearly all of Bonnell’s anticipated aluminum supply requirements.

The company said it remains on track to begin realizing benefits from One Tredegar in the first quarter of 2027.
