Tredegar Extrusions Profit Recovers After a First-Quarter Dip

Aluminum Extrusions EBITDA from ongoing operations reached $14.5 million in the second quarter, and the company said a $4.9 million FIFO aluminum benefit that lifted the year-over-year comparison is expected to be substantially neutralized in the third quarter.

Tredegar Corporation (TG) reported second-quarter 2026 net income from continuing operations of $6.0 million, or $0.17 a share, compared with $1.8 million, or $0.05 a share, a year earlier.

Consolidated EBITDA from ongoing operations was $14.2 million, up from $11.7 million in the first quarter of 2026. Aluminum Extrusions, the company’s larger reportable segment, generated $14.5 million of EBITDA from ongoing operations, reversing a first-quarter dip to $11.7 million. High Performance Films contributed $5.8 million.

President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Arijit (Bapi) DasGupta said the quarter was driven primarily by Aluminum Extrusions, with higher EBITDA from metal-related margin tailwinds, even as market conditions remained mixed amid economic uncertainty and trade policy.

Aluminum Extrusions net sales were $184.1 million, up 24.1% from a year earlier, primarily from the pass-through of higher metal costs, partially offset by lower volume. Sales volume was 38.3 million pounds, down 5.8% versus the second quarter of 2025 and up 8.8% versus the first quarter of 2026. Bonnell Aluminum, the extrusions business, posted a 16% decline in nonresidential building and construction volume, driven by higher costs, including significantly higher metal costs, and ongoing economic uncertainty. That end use represented about 48% of total volume.

Within specialty markets, TSLOTS shipments, about 11% of total volume, increased 45%, supported by demand for data-containment and data-center infrastructure. Consumer durables volume, 8% of total volume, decreased 18%. Automotive and transportation volume declined 16%.

Net new orders averaged 3.2 million pounds per week, versus 3.1 million a year earlier. Open orders were 23 million pounds at June 30, versus 19 million pounds at the end of the first quarter. That level falls within the normalized range associated with stable demand. After Section 232 aluminum tariffs rose to 50% in June 2025, Bonnell Aluminum experienced a decline in new orders of about 20%. Changes to the tariff structure announced in April 2026, including measures intended to close a loophole that allowed undervalued aluminum extrusions to enter the United States, appeared to be contributing to a more balanced competitive environment.

EBITDA from ongoing operations in Aluminum Extrusions increased $5.2 million versus the second quarter of 2025. The year-over-year lift reflected a $5.2 million increase in contribution margin, including a $4.9 million benefit from the timing of FIFO aluminum raw-material costs versus a $0.7 million charge a year earlier. Favorable manufacturing costs associated with casting capabilities, scrap spreads and higher scrap utilization were $5.1 million favorable in the second quarter of 2026 versus $0.7 million unfavorable a year earlier. The FIFO inventory and metal-price benefit is expected to be substantially neutralized during the third quarter.

Conflict-driven disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz beginning in March 2026 have constrained shipments and raised costs, contributing to historically low U.S. inventory levels. Through the remainder of 2026, nearly all of Bonnell Aluminum’s aluminum supply requirements are secured, and 2027 needs are under review to minimize Middle East exposure. Capital expenditures for Bonnell Aluminum are projected at $20 million in 2026.

High Performance Films net sales were $25.6 million. Surface Protection sales volume increased 17.8% versus the second quarter of 2025. Advanced packaging films volume decreased 17.8%. EBITDA from ongoing operations in the segment was $5.8 million, down $0.9 million from a year earlier, including a $0.3 million foreign currency transaction loss versus no gain or loss a year earlier. EBITDA from ongoing operations for High Performance Films has averaged about $5.0 million a quarter over the past 4.5 years.

Total debt was $46.0 million at June 30, 2026. Cash and cash equivalents were $17.2 million. Funds available to borrow under the $125 million ABL Facility were about $76 million. Median daily liquidity under the facility was $76 million in the second quarter, compared with $87 million in the first quarter.

DasGupta said the company has launched a transformation to “One Tredegar,” streamlined the organization around limited corporate and shared services, and initiated company-wide actions to reduce costs. He said targeted benefits from cost-reduction and operational-improvement initiatives are expected to begin materializing in the next six to nine months.
