LendingTree Posts $98.8 Million Goodwill Charge
Revenue reached $343.6 million in the third quarter as Insurance, Consumer and Home all grew year over year.
LendingTree, Inc. (TREE), operator of LendingTree.com, reported third-quarter revenue of $343.6 million, a 12% increase from a year earlier, after 25% year-over-year growth in the second quarter.
The online financial-services marketplace recorded a GAAP net loss of $72.4 million, or $5.15 a share, after a $98.8 million non-cash goodwill impairment. A year earlier the company posted net income of $10.2 million, or $0.73 a share.
Chief Executive Scott Peyree said the company posted its tenth straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth, powered by Insurance and by Home, which he attributed to home-equity lending.
Insurance remained the largest segment. Revenue was $234.9 million, up 15% from the year-ago quarter after 42% year-over-year growth in the second quarter. Segment profit was $54.2 million, up 14% from a year earlier.
Consumer revenue was $67.2 million, up 2% from the year-ago quarter after a 4% year-over-year decline in the second quarter. Segment profit was $29.6 million, down 16% from a year earlier, with profit equal to 44% of segment revenue.
Home revenue was $41.5 million, up 9% from a year earlier, matching the second quarter’s year-over-year rate. Segment profit was $12.4 million, up 5% from a year earlier. Home Equity revenue was $34.0 million, up 20% from the year-ago quarter. Chief Financial Officer Jason Bengel said the company continues to face interest-rate-related headwinds in Home.
Variable marketing margin was $94.9 million, or 28% of revenue. Adjusted EBITDA was $39.6 million, or 42% of variable marketing margin.
Peyree said the company rolled out voice AI, AI overviews on offer pages and staged distribution across product lines, and that successful expansion of those features should improve consumer satisfaction and monetization of traffic.
The company used excess cash to voluntarily repay $60 million of long-term debt during the quarter. Bengel said it intends to repurchase shares in the fourth quarter for the first time since the first quarter of 2022.
LendingTree updated its full-year 2026 outlook to revenue of $1.30 billion to $1.31 billion, variable marketing margin of $370 million to $375 million and adjusted EBITDA of $151 million to $153 million. Implied fourth-quarter revenue is $315 million to $325 million, variable marketing margin $88 million to $93 million and adjusted EBITDA $34 million to $36 million. Bengel said the company is on track to grow revenue and adjusted EBITDA this year by 17% and 14%, respectively, at the midpoint of the updated forecast.
