Markel Third-Quarter Adjusted Operating Income Rises to $707.4 Million
Adjusted operating income was $707.4 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, as Markel Insurance's combined ratio improved to 91.9%.
Markel Group Inc. (MKL), the holding company whose cornerstone is specialty insurer Markel Insurance, reported adjusted operating income of $707.4 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up from $436.1 million in the prior quarter. Consolidated operating income was $383.2 million, down from $1.01 billion a year earlier, as net investment results swung to a $280.9 million loss from a $432.9 million gain. Net income to shareholders was $259.3 million. Comprehensive income to shareholders was a $156.3 million loss.
The specialty insurer’s combined ratio improved to 91.9% from 92.9% in the second quarter. Underwriting profit rose to $178.3 million from $142.1 million. Earned premiums were $2.19 billion. Markel Insurance adjusted operating income was $420.9 million.
The company said the quarter-to-date combined ratio excluding current-accident-year catastrophe impact improved to 88.5% from 90.8%, primarily on a lower attritional loss ratio in international marine and energy lines, where breach premiums and additional growth lowered the attritional loss ratio versus the rest of the segment. The current accident year loss ratio excluding catastrophe impact was 58.2%.
Middle East conflict losses increased. Net losses and loss adjustment expenses related to the conflict were $74.6 million, or 3.4 points on the combined ratio, versus $41.0 million, or two points, in the prior quarter. The company said those losses were primarily marine war, terrorism, and energy coverages written by the International division. Additional gross written premiums on marine war coverages affected by the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine conflicts were $164.1 million, versus $34.5 million in the prior quarter.
Gross premium volume declined to $2.91 billion from $3.67 billion. Underwriting gross premium volume was $2.49 billion. Adjusted underwriting gross premium volume, which excludes Global Reinsurance and Hagerty in both periods, increased 9%. The company said the increase was driven by international marine and energy and international professional liability lines, partially offset by lower U.S. general liability and property premiums. Fronting gross premium volume fell to $419.0 million from $1.28 billion. Net written premiums were $2.15 billion. Net retention of underwriting gross premium volume rose to 87% from 86%.
The Global Reinsurance division, in run-off after the August 2025 sale of renewal rights, recorded $54.3 million of underwriting losses, a three-point unfavorable impact on the segment combined ratio, versus a two-point impact in the prior quarter. The company said those losses were driven by adverse development on professional liability product lines. On October 27, 2026, Markel Insurance entered an adverse development cover reinsurance agreement with Cavello Bay Reinsurance Limited, a subsidiary of Enstar, covering the run-off Global Reinsurance business and certain exited lines. Subject reserves were $4.8 billion; Markel Insurance will retain the first $2.6 billion and retrocede the next $2.3 billion, with $1.2 billion of adverse loss development coverage above subject reserves in exchange for a $120 million risk premium. Management said the net impacts are expected to have an immaterial impact on underwriting results in the fourth quarter.
Industrial operating revenues were $1.18 billion, and Industrial adjusted operating income was $131.1 million, up from $75.4 million. Financial adjusted operating income was $80.1 million, versus a $148.9 million loss in the prior quarter. Consumer and Other operating revenues were $296.3 million, and Consumer and Other adjusted operating income was $31.2 million.
The company said it continues to underwrite Middle East risks on a case-by-case basis and may adjust loss estimates as new information becomes available; additional losses may be incurred in subsequent periods.
