Property and casualty insurer The Travelers Companies, Inc. (TRV) gave back part of its second-quarter improvement in core profit, interrupting the advance between the first two quarters. Core income totaled $1.947 billion for the quarter ended September 30, following $2.160 billion in the second quarter and $1.696 billion in the first. The retreat came alongside a pause in underlying underwriting margin improvement.

The underlying combined ratio, which excluded catastrophe losses and prior-year reserve development, held at the second quarter’s 84.1%, after improving from 85.3% in the first quarter. Underlying underwriting income was $1.736 billion before tax. The distinction mattered: the underlying ratio held steady sequentially even as the reported ratio deteriorated, separating current underwriting performance from the effects of catastrophes and revisions to earlier years’ claims estimates.

Favorable reserve development provided less support than in the preceding quarter, totaling $234 million before tax against $578 million in the second quarter. All three segments recorded favorable development, despite a $295 million addition to asbestos reserves in Business Insurance. That segment’s favorable development primarily reflected better-than-expected loss experience across major product lines for recent accident years. Consolidated catastrophe losses were $538 million before tax, primarily from severe wind and hail storms across multiple states.

Investment earnings supplied a separate source of income. Net investment income reached a record $1.098 billion before tax, reflecting higher yields and growth in average invested assets in Travelers’ long-term fixed-income portfolio. Net income was $1.917 billion. The company recorded net realized investment losses, while share repurchases benefited per-share results.

Premium production showed a different mix across the business. Consolidated net written premiums totaled $11.480 billion. The reported total carried the effect of the Canadian operations Travelers sold in the first quarter; those operations had contributed $240 million to the year-earlier quarter. Business Insurance remained the largest segment by premiums, followed by Personal Insurance and Bond & Specialty Insurance.

Business Insurance generated $5.868 billion in net written premiums and $1.036 billion in after-tax segment income. Renewal premium change slowed to 4.1% from 4.8% in the second quarter, while retention was 86%. The segment combined commercial property and casualty products across small commercial, Middle Market and national accounts. Middle Market was its largest domestic premium category, making that business a substantial part of Travelers’ commercial insurance production.

Bond & Specialty Insurance recorded $1.209 billion in net written premiums and $309 million in after-tax segment income. Surety contributed $414 million in premiums, and production across that portfolio remained strong. Management Liability renewal premium change was 3.8%. The segment also included fidelity, professional liability and related coverages, with favorable reserve development primarily reflecting better-than-expected experience in fidelity and surety and in management liability’s general liability coverage.

Personal Insurance supplied the clearest segment-level earnings reversal against the year-earlier quarter. After-tax income fell to $706 million from $807 million, primarily because of higher catastrophe losses. The segment recorded $4.403 billion in net written premiums. Its underlying combined ratio was 76.7%, with underlying margin improvement primarily attributable to Automobile. The storm burden therefore accompanied a different direction in underlying underwriting performance.

Travelers returned $1.769 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including $1.508 billion in share repurchases. Repurchases benefited per-share earnings, extending capital returns alongside its underwriting and investment results. Its board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.25 a share, payable in December. At quarter-end, Travelers retained $2.415 billion of capacity under its existing share repurchase authorizations.
