Pilgrim's Pride to Acquire Walkers Deli & Sausage Company
The acquisition aims to expand the company's presence in the United Kingdom's value-added premium pork categories.
Pilgrim's Europe (PPC) agreed to acquire Walkers Deli & Sausage Company in a deal of unspecified value.
The transaction remains subject to approval by the Competition and Markets Authority in the United Kingdom, as well as employee consultation within the UK.
Pilgrim's Europe said the acquisition represents an important strategic step to strengthen its position within the UK food industry and expand its presence in value-added premium pork categories. Fabio Sandri, CEO of Pilgrim’s, said: "The addition of Walkers further advances our strategy to grow through a diversified portfolio of value-added food businesses in key markets around the world. This transaction strengthens our European platform, expands our capabilities in value-added foods and supports our long-term growth ambitions".
The move aligns with a broader corporate strategy to reduce volatility by diversifying product portfolios and increasing the proportion of value-added brands. In its European operations, the company has previously focused on enhancing its mix by expanding into branded growth and innovation models.
The acquisition follows a pattern of consolidation in the packaged meats sector to secure brand longevity and market share. For example, Smithfield Foods (SFD) recently entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Nathan’s Famous (NATH) for approximately $450 million to secure rights to the iconic hot dog brand in perpetuity.
Pilgrim's Europe continues to integrate its UK and European food operations, having previously consolidated multiple manufacturing companies into a single business structure to drive operational efficiencies and procurement savings.
