Samsung SDI expands battery portfolio for AI and robotics
The energy solution business accounted for 94% of total revenue.
The battery and electronic materials provider Samsung SDI reported that its energy solution segment, which produces lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and smartphones, represented 94% of total revenue,. The company said that medium-sized batteries for electric vehicles are growing over the long term due to eco-friendly policies in major regions like Europe and the introduction of various vehicle models. Large batteries for energy storage systems are also seeing high growth driven by the expansion of renewable power generation and increased electricity demand from AI data centers.
Small batteries are being applied to a wider range of products, including micro-mobility devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters, as well as battery back-up units for data centers. The company expects short-term slight growth in the small battery market due to base effects from delayed demand recovery last year. Long-term growth is projected to be driven by new form factors like 46-phi cylindrical batteries and demand from robotics and aerospace sectors.
Samsung SDI is pursuing the development and mass production of sodium batteries and aims to lead the industry with all-solid-state batteries, targeting mass production by 2027. To establish a global production hub for these next-generation batteries, including LFP and sodium variants for energy storage systems, the company announced an investment plan in Ulsan spanning from January 2026 to December 2040.
In the electronic materials segment, which made up 6% of total revenue, the company noted that demand for semiconductor materials is influenced by the production volumes of chipmakers,. The company expects continued growth in related materials as demand for AI semiconductors increases. Additionally, the company said that demand for OLED materials is growing significantly as these panels are increasingly adopted in televisions and mobile IT products.
