Toyota FY2026 operating profit falls 21.5% as costs rise

Tariff effects and higher overheads weighed on earnings, partly offset by commercial measures and stronger financial-segment profit.

Toyota recorded operating profit of ¥3.7662 trillion for the year ended March 31, 2026, a decline of ¥1.0293 trillion, or 21.5%, from the prior year. Higher expenses reduced profit by ¥2.03 trillion, including a ¥1.38 trillion effect from US tariffs, while commercial efforts contributed ¥710 billion.

Toyota automotive operations generated ¥46.079610 trillion in revenue and ¥2.923556 trillion in operating profit in fiscal 2026. The financial segment generated ¥4.857115 trillion in revenue and ¥851.722 billion in operating profit, compared with ¥683.519 billion a year earlier.

Toyota cost of sales rose 10.2% to ¥39.1414 trillion, including a ¥395 billion increase in operating costs related to supplier-base strengthening and higher material prices. Design-led cost reductions of ¥215 billion and factory and logistics improvements of ¥60 billion partly offset that pressure.

Toyota is pursuing further improvement in break-even vehicle volumes through fixed-cost reviews, cost reductions, commercial measures and greater use of AI for routine or lower-value work. Toyota also identified tariffs and trade measures as risks that could raise product costs, weaken future demand and disrupt supply chains or logistics.
