Thomson Reuters Net Earnings Reach 459 Million in First Quarter
The professional software and insights provider reported revenues of 2,087 million for the three months ended March 31, 2026
Thomson Reuters Corporation (TRI), a provider of software and insights for legal, tax, audit, accounting, compliance, government, and media professionals, reported net earnings of 459 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2026. This compared to 434 million for the same period in 2025.
Revenues rose to 2,087 million from 1,900 million in the prior-year quarter. Operating profit increased to 639 million from 563 million. The company's operating expenses rose to 1,203 million from 1,108 million during the same period. Amortization of software, a significant component of these expenses, increased to 193 million from 174 million.
Earnings attributable to common shareholders were 459 million. Basic and diluted earnings per share were 1.03, compared to 0.96 a share in the first quarter of 2025. From continuing operations, basic and diluted earnings per share were 1.07, up from 0.94 a share. The company recorded a loss from discontinued operations of 18 million, compared to earnings of 9 million from discontinued operations in the prior year.
Net cash provided by operating activities was 505 million, an increase from 445 million in the first quarter of 2025. The company used 367 million for investing activities, which included 212 million for acquisitions, net of cash acquired. This was a decrease in spending compared to the 756 million used in the prior-year period, which included 606 million for acquisitions. Capital expenditures were 156 million, compared to 151 million in 2025.
Financing activities resulted in a net cash use of 248 million. This included 280 million in dividends paid on common shares and 262 million for the repurchase of common shares. The company also recorded net borrowings under short-term loan facilities of 322 million.
Total equity as of March 31, 2026, was 11,812 million, down from 11,914 million on December 31, 2025. Total assets remained nearly flat at 17,944 million, compared to 17,940 million at the end of 2025. Current indebtedness rose to 1,120 million from 795 million during that period.
