Weis Markets' Third-Quarter Revenue Growth Slows

Net income rose 31.4% to $22.21 million, or $0.90 a share, as gross profit margin reached 25.5%.

Weis Markets, Inc. (WMK), the Mid-Atlantic food retailer, reported third-quarter total revenue of $1.28 billion for the 13 weeks ended September 26, 2026, a 3.0% increase from a year earlier. That pace slowed from a 4.6% rise in both the second and first quarters.

Comparable store sales increased 1.3%, down from 2.3% in the second quarter. Excluding fuel, comparable store sales decreased 1.2%.

The company said sales growth was driven primarily by higher fuel sales, which it attributed to both retail price inflation and increased gallons sold, and by sales from new stores. Those gains were partially offset by lower overall sales in pharmacy, dairy and produce. Pharmacy sales were negatively impacted by approximately $14.56 million from pricing headwinds related to Inflation Reduction Act Medicare maximum fair price provisions that took effect January 1, 2026, reducing total revenue growth by about 1.2 percentage points. Dairy sales reflected lower egg pricing versus the prior year, and produce sales were affected by lower customer demand during the Cyclospora outbreak.

Gross profit increased 5.8% to $324.61 million, and gross profit margin rose to 25.5% from 24.8% a year earlier. Chairman, President and CEO Jonathan H. Weis said improved store inventory shrink performance and lower costs within the internal supply chain helped drive the higher margin. Income from operations increased 38.6% to $28.51 million.

Net income was $22.21 million, up 31.4% from $16.90 million a year earlier. Earnings were $0.90 a share, compared with $0.69. The company said the increase in operating income more than offset lower investment income and a higher effective income tax rate.

For the 39 weeks ended September 26, 2026, total revenue was $3.81 billion, a 4.1% increase from the same period in 2025. Year-to-date comparable store sales increased 1.9%; excluding fuel, they decreased 0.1%. Pharmacy sales for the year-to-date period were negatively impacted by approximately $32.75 million from the same Medicare maximum fair price provisions, reducing year-to-date revenue growth by about 0.9 percentage points.

Year-to-date gross profit increased 7.8% to $983.26 million, and gross profit margin increased to 25.9% from 25.0% a year earlier. Income from operations increased 28.6% to $93.31 million. Net income totaled $72.92 million, up 18.1% from $61.73 million. Earnings were $2.95 a share, compared with $2.38. Lower investment income and a higher effective income tax rate moderated the increase in net income.

Mr. Weis said customers remained cautious with spending and continued to seek affordability and value. The company said it continues to support customers through price investments and an expanded loyalty marketing program.

The company currently operates 201 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia. On October 29, 2026, the board declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.34 a share, payable November 23, 2026, to shareholders of record as of November 9, 2026.
