Magnachip Misses Gross-Margin Outlook on Currency
Third-quarter continuing-operations revenue was $44.0 million, while gross margin fell to 14.0% from 19.3% as the company cited unfavorable foreign exchange.
Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation (MX), a designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal power semiconductor platform solutions, reported third-quarter 2026 continuing-operations revenue of $44.0 million, inside its $41.5 million to $45.5 million guidance range.
Gross profit margin from continuing operations was 14.0%, below the 17.0% to 19.0% range the company had set, after a 3.7-point sequential expansion in the second quarter. The company said the miss was primarily due to unfavorable foreign exchange movements.
Power Analog Solutions, the larger of the two continuing businesses, generated $39.6 million of revenue, down 2.3% from $40.6 million in the prior quarter. Its gross margin was 10.7%, down 6.5 percentage points from 17.2%. Power IC revenue was $4.3 million, up 5.1% from $4.1 million, reversing a 9.4% sequential decline in the second quarter. Power IC gross margin was 45.0%, up 4.1 percentage points from 40.9%.
GAAP operating loss widened to $12.9 million from $10.0 million in the second quarter. Loss from continuing operations was $13.3 million, or $0.36 a share, compared with $7.6 million, or $0.21 a share, in the prior quarter. Adjusted operating loss was $8.6 million. Adjusted EBITDA improved to a $3.5 million loss from a $4.2 million loss in the second quarter. Adjusted loss was $10.7 million, or $0.29 a share.
The company recorded $1.9 million of early termination and other charges in the quarter, consisting of $601 thousand in tax-related charges and $1.3 million of costs associated with an electrical substation upgrade at its Gumi fabrication facility.
Chief Executive Officer Chae Lee said headwinds to near-term financial performance remain, and that the company has accelerated new-generation product development and strengthened its partnership with Navitas Semiconductor. Magnachip announced a $5 million strategic equity investment by Navitas and launched 15 new sixth-generation E6 Super-Junction MOSFETs targeting TVs, notebook adapters, PC power supplies and other consumer and industrial power applications.
Chief Financial Officer Shinyoung Park said third-quarter revenue was within the guidance range and that gross profit margin was below expectations primarily due to unfavorable foreign exchange movements.
For the fourth quarter of 2026, Magnachip expects continuing-operations revenue of $41.0 million to $45.0 million, reflecting typical seasonal softness. At the midpoint, that range is 2.2% below the $44.0 million just reported. The company guided consolidated gross profit margin from continuing operations to 10% to 12%, versus 14.0% in the third quarter. It said the sequential decline is primarily due to lower utilization from a power shutdown in the fab for the substation upgrade and appreciation of the Korean won.
Park said the company remains focused on managing costs and maintaining financial flexibility to support its strategic transformation. Cash and cash equivalents were $86.9 million at September 30, 2026.
