Albemarle Raises Specialties EBITDA Outlook After Cost Gains
Third-quarter net sales were $1.55 billion, up 19%, as Energy Storage realized prices reached $20.02 a kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent.
Albemarle Corporation (ALB), a global supplier of lithium and bromine, raised its full-year 2026 Specialties adjusted EBITDA outlook to $350 million to $375 million from $275 million to $325 million after more than $150 million of year-to-date run-rate cost and productivity improvements, the high end of its full-year target.
Net sales for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, were $1.55 billion, up 19% from a year earlier, after a 31% year-over-year increase in the second quarter. Net income attributable to Albemarle was $297 million, or $2.15 a share, versus a $161 million loss, or $1.72 a share, a year earlier. Adjusted net income was $354 million, or $2.58 a share.
Adjusted EBITDA was $646 million, up 186% from the year-ago quarter, after a 155% year-over-year increase in the second quarter. The company said the increase was due primarily to higher pricing in Energy Storage, increased pricing and volumes in Specialties, and cost and productivity improvements.
Energy Storage net sales were $1.12 billion, up 58% year over year, after a 78% year-over-year increase in the prior quarter. Average realized price rose to $20.02 a kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent from $10.28 a year earlier. Sales volume fell to 56 kilotons LCE from 69 a year earlier, after an 11% year-over-year volume increase in the second quarter. The company said the volume decline was primarily due to timing events in the prior-year period, including inventory destocking and higher-than-usual spodumene shipments, which made the third quarter of 2025 the segment’s record highest volume quarter on an LCE basis.
Energy Storage adjusted EBITDA was $560 million, up 351% year over year, after a 229% year-over-year increase in the second quarter. The company said the increase was primarily due to improved lithium pricing and was partially offset by higher-price spodumene inventory processed in the quarter and increased Chilean commissions.
Specialties net sales were $389 million, up 13% year over year, with price up 10% and volume up 3%. Specialties adjusted EBITDA was $99 million, up 31% year over year. The company said the EBITDA increase was primarily due to higher volumes and favorable pricing in bromine and derivatives, continued productivity improvements, and proactive management of cost escalations driven by the conflict in the Middle East. The Jordan Bromine Company joint venture achieved record quarterly production.
The company said Specialties adjusted EBITDA outlook is improved as strong year-to-date performance, primarily driven by cost and productivity improvements, more than offset supply-chain related cost escalation due to the conflict in the Middle East. The outlook continues to reflect modest volume growth in key end markets led by semiconductors, oil and gas, flame retardants and pharmaceuticals, and steady year-to-date demand in automotive and petrochemical markets. Fourth-quarter Specialties outlook assumes steady demand in the bromine market and the impact of the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
Albemarle now expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of $300 million to $350 million, down from approximately $500 million, reflecting continued benefits from focused capital efficiency improvements as well as resequencing of some early-stage project spend.
Fourth-quarter 2026 Energy Storage net sales and adjusted EBITDA are expected to decrease sequentially due to lower market pricing with steady sales volumes. Fourth-quarter margins are expected to decrease sequentially due to consumption of higher-cost spodumene inventory purchased in prior periods. Full-year Energy Storage production volumes are expected to increase year over year. Sales volumes are expected to be in the range of 225 to 235 kilotons LCE, as increased Wodgina volumes partially offset a delay in the Talison CGP3 ramp due to a fire that occurred on June 9. Talison’s Chemical Grade Plant 3 achieved 30 days of nameplate performance in September.
Cash from operating activities was $406 million in the third quarter, and free cash flow was $325 million. Operating cash flow conversion was 63%, supported by a cash dividend from the Talison joint venture which partly offset timing of working capital changes. In the first nine months of 2026, cash from operations was $1.5 billion, up $568 million from the prior-year period, and free cash flow was $1.2 billion. Capital expenditures of $251 million in the first nine months decreased $184 million versus the prior-year period. As of September 30, 2026, estimated liquidity was approximately $3.4 billion, including $1.8 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Total debt was $1.9 billion, a net debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio of approximately 0.3.
The effective income tax rate for the third quarter of 2026 was 16.4%, or 5.8% on an adjusted basis, due to geographic income mix. Chairman and CEO Kent Masters said Albemarle delivered another solid quarter, reflecting disciplined execution across the enterprise, and that in Specialties, improved pricing and sustained progress on cost and productivity initiatives support an additional increased outlook for the year. The company said global lithium demand is up 48% year-to-date through August, driven by both electric vehicles and energy storage.
