HNI Raises Steelcase Synergy Target After Earnings Beat
Non-GAAP diluted EPS reached $1.62 in the third quarter, up 47.3%, as organic sales rose 5.6% and Steelcase synergies were lifted to at least $130 million.
HNI Corporation (HNI), a manufacturer of workplace furnishings and residential building products, reported third-quarter GAAP diluted earnings of $1.23 a share, up 39.8% from a year earlier, and non-GAAP diluted earnings of $1.62 a share, up 47.3%. The company said both figures well exceeded internal expectations.
Net sales were $1.59 billion. The December 2025 Steelcase acquisition and a workplace-furnishings dealer purchase added $870.6 million to the year-over-year comparison. Organic net sales rose 5.6%. Net income was $90.0 million.
The company said profit improvement versus the prior year was driven by the Steelcase acquisition, operational productivity, price-cost, and organic volume growth in both segments. SG&A cost management, price-cost benefits, investment timing, and productivity savings more than offset slightly lower-than-expected volume growth.
Workplace Furnishings net sales were $1.42 billion. On an organic basis, segment net sales increased 5.9%. Volume growth turned positive in the third quarter, with volume growth and price recognition driving that organic increase. GAAP operating margin in the segment was 9.3%, down 280 basis points year-over-year, which the company attributed to Steelcase impacts, purchase accounting, and higher restructuring costs, partially offset by price-cost, productivity, and net tariff effects. Non-GAAP Workplace Furnishings operating margin was 11.7%. Excluding Steelcase, legacy Workplace Furnishings GAAP operating margin was 15%, up 250 basis points, and non-GAAP operating margin excluding Steelcase reached a third-quarter record of 16%.
Workplace Furnishings orders increased six percent year-over-year. Contract customers solidly outperformed small and medium-sized businesses, and Steelcase order growth was stronger than legacy Workplace Furnishings trends. Over the most recent five-week period, segment orders continued to grow year-over-year.
Residential Building Products net sales were $175.0 million, up 4.8%. Remodel-retrofit sales increased double digits and more than offset modest weakness in new construction. GAAP operating margin was 19.8%, up 180 basis points; non-GAAP operating margin was 20.2%. Segment orders grew four percent versus the third quarter of 2025.
Consolidated GAAP operating income was $136.7 million. Non-GAAP operating income was $173.1 million. Restructuring and impairment charges of $7.3 million were incurred, primarily related to structural cost actions. Non-cash purchase accounting of $24.8 million related to Steelcase was included in operating expenses.
Steelcase integration synergies are now expected to add at least $130 million of operating profit when fully mature, up from a prior $120 million target. The original $120 million is now expected by the end of year four. The company said synergy capture is ahead of plan, with the near-term upside partially offset by temporary price-cost pressure from accelerating inflation. Pricing actions are expected to bring a return of price-cost neutrality in 2027. Manufacturing network optimization savings in legacy Workplace Furnishings remain expected to total nearly $30 million in 2026 through 2028.
For the full year 2026, the company still expects low-single-digit organic net sales growth in both segments and non-GAAP diluted EPS growth of 20-25 percent, the fifth straight year of double-digit non-GAAP diluted EPS growth. Fourth-quarter non-GAAP diluted EPS is expected to increase at a rate in the mid-20 percent range from fourth-quarter 2025 levels. Legacy Workplace Furnishings fourth-quarter net sales are expected to increase at a low-single-digit rate, including an estimated three-percentage-point headwind from an extra week in 2025; including Steelcase, total Workplace Furnishings net sales are expected to nearly double. Residential Building Products fourth-quarter net sales are expected to be roughly unchanged versus the same period in 2025.
