Ball's Comparable Earnings Growth Cools After a Faster Second Quarter

Comparable diluted earnings were $1.10 a share, up 6.8%, as a $482 million business-consolidation charge produced a $94 million GAAP loss.

Ball Corporation (BALL) reported a third-quarter U.S. GAAP net loss of $94 million, or 36 cents a share, after a $482 million charge for business consolidation and other activities, versus a $78 million benefit a year earlier. Sales were $4.19 billion, compared with $3.38 billion in the year-ago quarter.

The aluminum packaging maker’s comparable diluted earnings were $1.10 a share, up 6.8% from $1.03 a year earlier, after a 14.4% year-over-year increase in the second quarter. Comparable operating earnings rose 2.5% to $451 million from $440 million, after a 7.7% increase in the prior quarter. Global aluminum packaging shipments increased 4.7%, after a 4.3% rise in the second quarter.

Chief executive Ron Lewis said the company delivered another quarter of strong results, citing global volume and operating earnings growth.

Beverage packaging, North and Central America, comparable operating earnings were $210 million on sales of $2.06 billion, versus $215 million on $1.64 billion a year earlier. The company said third-quarter sales reflected higher volume and favorable price/mix, primarily attributable to higher aluminum prices. Segment volume increased a low-single-digit percentage. Comparable operating earnings decreased year-over-year due to higher costs, primarily higher operating costs and plant start-up costs, partially offset by favorable price/mix, including the timing of metal pass-through, and higher volume.

Beverage packaging, EMEA, comparable operating earnings were $170 million on sales of $1.33 billion, versus $164 million on $1.13 billion a year earlier. Sales reflected higher shipments and favorable price/mix. Volume increased a mid-single-digit percentage. The segment includes the Benepack business acquired in January 2026, when Ball bought an 80 percent capital share of Benepack’s European beverage can manufacturing operations, and reflects a first-quarter 2026 realignment of facilities in India and Myanmar and the former Saudi Arabian business.

Beverage packaging, South America, comparable operating earnings were $92 million on sales of $653 million, versus $77 million on $508 million a year earlier. Sales reflected higher volume and favorable price/mix, primarily attributable to higher aluminum prices. Volume increased a low-double-digit percentage.

Reconciling items, net, were negative $596 million in the third quarter, versus negative $49 million a year earlier.

The company returned $431 million to shareholders via share repurchases and dividends in the first nine months of 2026 and said it is on track to return at least $800 million through buybacks and dividends by year-end. For full-year 2026, Ball expects comparable diluted earnings per share growth of 10-plus percent and free cash flow in the range of $900 million, narrowing the prior outlook of greater than $900 million.

Ball announced a new beverage can manufacturing facility in Baruth, Germany, to support long-term customer growth in EMEA, and a new beverage can manufacturing facility in India.

Chief financial officer Dan Rabbitt said the company remains on track to deliver its long-term objective of 4 to 6 percent operating earnings growth while generating cash flow and growing EVA. Lewis said the company is confident it can invest behind EVA-accretive opportunities and deliver sustainable growth.
