Trinity Cuts 2026 Delivery Outlook, Keeps EPS Range

Third-quarter revenue was $535.1 million as Rail Products deliveries reached 2,030 railcars and orders of 2,190 lifted backlog to $1.65 billion.

Trinity Industries (TRN), the Dallas-based railcar leasing and manufacturing company, reported third-quarter revenue of $535.1 million, up 18% from $454.1 million a year earlier, and income from continuing operations of $0.27 a share.

The year-ago comparison still included two partially-owned leasing subsidiaries that have since been divested. Operating profit was $95.6 million, down from $118.6 million a year earlier, as lower lease-portfolio-sale gains and higher selling, engineering, and administrative expenses more than offset a manufacturing-facility sale gain. EBITDA was $168.6 million.

Rail Products was the operating inflection. Deliveries were 2,030 railcars, up from 1,680 a year earlier, and 29% higher than the 1,570 delivered in the second quarter. New orders were 2,190 units, or $325.0 million, versus 350 units, or $50.7 million, a year earlier. Backlog stood at $1,646.7 million. Segment revenue was $339.5 million and operating profit $30.7 million, a 9.0% margin. The company also delivered 355 sustainable railcar conversions, with a 60-unit conversion backlog worth $5.8 million.

Chief Executive Officer Jean Savage said deliveries increased 29% sequentially and orders exceeded deliveries. She said that, excluding the gain on the sale of a facility, segment margin improved from the second quarter, and that a shrinking fleet and fewer railcars in storage pointed to a tightening market. The company said it believes 2026 will mark the cyclical low point for industry deliveries.

Railcar Leasing and Services revenue was $286.3 million, down from $301.0 million a year earlier after the divestitures, partially offset by repairs mix, higher lease rates, and net fleet additions. Operating profit was $98.0 million, a 34.2% margin. Gains on lease portfolio sales were $8.5 million. Fleet utilization was 97.0% at quarter-end. The Future Lease Rate Differential was +0.1%. The wholly-owned lease fleet was 97,160 units; the partially-owned fleet was zero after partnership transactions, and the investor-owned fleet was 50,260 units. Savage said renewal success improved to 89% and renewal rates were 4.1% above expiring rates, and that lease rates have not risen as quickly as asset values.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2026, net cash from continuing operations was $242.7 million, versus $187.2 million a year earlier. Cash flow from operations with net gains on lease portfolio sales was $281.4 million. Net fleet investment was $240.8 million and returns of capital to stockholders were $118.7 million. Last-twelve-months return on equity was 29.1% and adjusted ROE was 31.8%. Committed liquidity was $897 million at September 30.

The company cut 2026 industry-delivery guidance to below 25,000 railcars from approximately 25,000 and cut net fleet investment guidance to $300 million to $350 million from $300 million to $400 million. It reiterated EPS guidance of $2.20 to $2.40, excluding items outside core operations, and said it expects to finish within that range and is raising expectations for full-year secondary-market gains on railcar sales. Operating and administrative capital expenditures remain $55 million to $65 million.

After quarter-end, Trinity acquired the assets of Rubber Lining Specialists, LLC, an Orange, Texas-based rubber-lining and repair provider, and Trinity Rail Leasing 2026 LLC entered a $350 million term loan maturing October 2031 at SOFR plus 1.30%, using proceeds to redeem Series 2019-2 notes at 3.10% and repay TILC warehouse borrowings.
