Azenta Acquires SynPlexity to Expand GENEWIZ Synthesis

The life sciences company paired the SynPlexity purchase with an exclusive Elegen license to widen GENEWIZ gene-synthesis and high-throughput discovery offerings.

Azenta, Inc. (AZTA), a leading provider of life science solutions, announced it had acquired SynPlexity Inc. and entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Elegen Corp. to expand GENEWIZ capabilities in gene synthesis and high-throughput discovery workflows.

The company said the two moves are intended to strengthen gene synthesis capabilities, expand high-throughput discovery workflows, and position GENEWIZ for long-term growth. The announcement did not specify a purchase price, payment mix, or expected close for the SynPlexity transaction.

GENEWIZ is one of Azenta’s industry-leading brands alongside FluidX, Ziath, 4titude, Limfinity, Freezer Pro, and Barkey. The company provides cold-chain sample management and multiomics services across drug development, clinical research, and advanced cell therapies, with operations in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Trey Martin, President, Multiomics at Azenta, said the investments “strengthen the competitive position of GENEWIZ by expanding the products and capabilities we can bring to customers and are key to accelerating our growth.”

Martin took the Multiomics presidency on April 6, 2026, to accelerate execution of the long-range plan outlined at Azenta’s December 2025 Investor Day, with a continued focus on scaling global synthesis capabilities, operational excellence, commercial discipline, and profitable growth across the integrated Multiomics platform. Ginger Zhou stepped down from that role and continued in an advisory capacity through November 2026.

The SynPlexity deal and the Elegen license sit alongside a broader pattern of bolt-on acquisitions Azenta has used to add capabilities to existing brands. In March 2026, Azenta UK Ltd completed the purchase of UK Biocentre Limited for GBP 20.5 million, net of cash and inclusive of up to GBP 1.8 million in contingent consideration, to expand biorepository and sample-management capacity in the United Kingdom. The company then said that acquisition was expected to be dilutive to 2026 Adjusted EBITDA margin by approximately 35 bps and accretive to its 2027 and 2028 organic revenue growth and margin expansion targets set at the December Investor Day.

Azenta said the SynPlexity acquisition and the Elegen licensing agreement are the instruments for widening GENEWIZ’s product set in synthesis and discovery. Martin’s mandate, set when he became Multiomics president, remains scaling global synthesis and running the platform for profitable growth.
