Republic Core Margin Extends Expansion to 4.03%

Core Banking net interest income rose 8% to $66.1 million as the margin reached 4.03% and the RPS program added about $180 million of lower-cost deposits.

Republic Bancorp (RBCAA), the Louisville holding company of Republic Bank & Trust Company, posted third-quarter 2026 net income of $31.1 million, or $1.59 a share, up 4% and 5% from a year earlier, with return on average assets of 1.74% and return on average equity of 10.48%.

The Core Banking franchise remained the earnings engine. Core Banking net interest income rose $4.8 million, or 8%, to $66.1 million, after a $4.2 million, or 7%, increase in the second quarter. The Core Bank’s net interest margin expanded 25 basis points year over year to 4.03%, after a 30 basis point expansion to 4.02% in the second quarter. The company attributed the lift to a 35 basis point reduction in funding costs, a favorable shift in earning assets, disciplined pricing, and balance-sheet management.

Traditional Banking contributed most of the interest-income gain. Average loans increased $125 million, or 3%, to $4.70 billion, with the weighted-average yield up 6 basis points to 5.77%. The company said growth came primarily from commercial lending and from reinvesting runoff into higher-yielding originations. Period-over-period comparisons were reduced by an $82 million loan sale in the first quarter of 2026 that had added about 5 basis points to yield a year earlier. Warehouse average outstanding lines rose $10 million, or 2%, to $585 million, while average committed lines increased to $1.19 billion from $1.06 billion. Utilization moderated to 49% from 54%. Warehouse net interest income was $3.71 million.

Funding costs fell. Interest-bearing deposit cost declined 33 basis points to 1.99%. Average interest-bearing deposits rose a net $127 million, or 3%, led by a $167 million increase in money market and time deposits and a $59 million decline in brokered and reciprocal deposits. Average FHLB advances declined $235 million, or 63%, with cost down 49 basis points to 3.84% after a March 2026 prepayment of $220 million of advances that had carried a 4.57% weighted-average rate.

A new Republic Payment Solutions program generated approximately $180 million of lower-cost average deposits in the third quarter after a June launch that had been expected to contribute over $150 million of lower-cost average deposits for the remainder of 2026. President and Chief Executive Officer Logan Pichel said the Federal Reserve’s September 16 increase of the Federal Funds Target Rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00% was the first increase since July 2023, and that, based on the company’s current interest-rate risk position, the higher-rate environment will provide incremental growth to Core Bank net interest income over the near term.

Core Banking net income totaled $22.8 million, up $3.0 million, or 15%, from $19.8 million a year earlier. Noninterest income increased $384,000, or 4%, to $10.9 million. Service charges on deposits rose $935,000, or 26%. Mortgage banking income fell $842,000, or 41%, on lower origination activity after a rise in long-term rates. Noninterest expense declined $1.2 million, or 3%, to $45.9 million, with technology and interchange-related expenses down a combined $639,000, or 7%, after an October 2025 core operating system contract.

Credit costs moved with the loan book. Core Banking provision flipped to a $2.0 million net charge from a $479,000 net credit a year earlier. Traditional Banking recorded a $2.2 million charge tied to a $38 million period-end loan increase and a $43 million rise in Construction and Land Development. Warehouse Lending recorded a $192,000 credit on a $77 million, or 13%, drop in period-end balances. Core Banking allowance-to-total-loans rose 12 basis points to 1.28% at September 30, 2026, with Traditional Banking allowance-to-loans up 11 basis points to 1.39%. Nonperforming loans to total loans rose to 0.63% from 0.42% a year earlier, and quarterly net charge-offs to average loans, on an annualized basis, rose to 0.04% from 0.02%.

Republic Processing Group net income was $8.3 million, compared with $9.9 million a year earlier. Republic Credit Solutions net income declined $1.1 million, or 15%, to $6.2 million, as higher provisions on LOC II growth and higher marketing costs more than offset net interest income and program-fee growth.
