Norwood Extends Record Net Interest Income Streak

Net interest income hit a record $28.0 million in the third quarter as the fully taxable-equivalent margin reached 4.01%.

Norwood Financial Corp (NWFL), the holding company of Wayne Bank, reported record net interest income of $28.0 million for the three months ended September 30, 2026, up $7.6 million from $20.5 million a year earlier and $1.2 million from $26.8 million in the second quarter.

The Pennsylvania community bank extended a two-quarter run of record net interest income. Fully taxable-equivalent net interest margin expanded 38 basis points year over year to 4.01% from 3.63%, and 11 basis points from 3.90% in the linked quarter, after a 22 basis points linked-quarter expansion in the second quarter.

President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Donnelly said the margin expansion reflected disciplined balance sheet management and a one-time benefit from resolving a borrower bankruptcy, including settlement of debtor-in-possession financing and removal of a loan from non-accrual.

Average loan yield rose to 6.43% from 6.35% in the prior quarter and 6.22% a year earlier. Average interest-earning asset yield increased to 5.92% from 5.87% and 5.69%. Average interest-bearing deposit cost declined to 2.51% from 2.55% in the prior quarter and 2.66% a year earlier; time-deposit cost fell to 3.41% from 3.46% and 3.72%.

Net income was a record $11.8 million, up $3.4 million from $8.3 million a year earlier and $2.4 million from $9.3 million in the linked quarter. Diluted earnings per share were $1.08, versus $0.89 a year earlier and $0.86 in the second quarter. Return on average tangible equity was 18.51%, up 175 basis points from 16.76% a year earlier and 347 basis points from 15.04% in the linked quarter.

Pre-provision net revenue was $15.4 million, compared with $10.0 million in the prior-year quarter and $13.6 million in the linked quarter. Other income was $2.92 million versus $2.51 million a year earlier, with service charges and fees of $2.00 million versus $1.66 million. The efficiency ratio improved to 50.28% from 56.33% a year earlier.

The provision for credit losses was $100 thousand in the third quarter, versus a $502 thousand release a year earlier, after $1.9 million of provision in the second quarter. Management said removing the loan from non-accrual lowered provision expense.

During the second quarter the company recorded a $729 thousand charge-off related to a borrower that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In the third quarter, one of the loans placed on non-accrual was purchased by a new entity, as was the underlying business. Past-due interest was paid, and DIP financing, interest and fees were settled as part of the loan purchase. Following the purchase, two loans related to the borrower remained with a total exposure of $7.1 million.

Nonperforming loans to total loans fell to 0.73% from 1.23% at June 30, 2026. Nonperforming assets to total assets were 0.59%. Net charge-offs to average loans were 0.13% annualized in the third quarter, matching the year-ago quarter and after 0.09% in the second quarter. The allowance for credit losses to total loans was 1.10%.

Loans receivable were $2.294 billion, up 20.9% from $1.815 billion a year earlier, after 26.4% year-over-year growth at June 30, 2026. Total deposits were $2.509 billion, up 17.3% from $2.074 billion a year earlier, after 25.8% year-over-year growth at June 30, 2026. Total assets were $2.951 billion.

Tangible book value per share was $22.35, down $0.61 from $22.96 at June 30, 2026, after a $0.54 linked-quarter increase in the second quarter.

Donnelly said the company’s financial position is strong and that it believes it is poised to extend performance for long-term shareholder value creation.
