Seneca Foods boosts operating cash despite seasonal pack
Seneca Foods improved its quarterly operating cash flow through stronger asset and liability contributions, even as inventory replenishment began.
Seneca Foods (SENEA) increased its cash provided by operating activities to $109.1 million for the three months ended June 27, 2026, up from $53.7 million in the same period the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by a significant increase in the contribution from changes in operating assets and liabilities, which provided $82.4 million in the 2026 quarter compared to $38.9 million in the prior-year period.
The improvement in operating cash flow occurred despite the onset of the company's seasonal pack, a period from June through November when the majority of inventories are produced. For both the 2026 and 2025 June quarters, Seneca Foods disclosed that inventories acted as a use of cash as the early stages of the seasonal pack commenced. The cited filings do not specify which other operating assets or liabilities offset this inventory spend to produce the higher aggregate cash contribution in 2026.
Seneca Foods stated that a strong cash position leading into fiscal year 2027 and continued positive operating cash flows allowed the company to minimize use of its revolving credit facility during the quarter. Seneca Foods also utilized cash on hand to make a $50.0 million voluntary prepayment on its Amended Term Loan A-2.
Historically, the company has faced elevated working capital needs. Management noted that these requirements trended higher in recent fiscal years due to inflationary pressures in the steel industry affecting can manufacturing and the need for larger annual pack sizes to replenish post-pandemic inventory levels. Because the business is tied to vegetable growing cycles, cash requirements fluctuate significantly throughout the year, making the management of working capital a primary liquidity requirement alongside debt service and capital expenditures.
