Steel Dynamics Extends Sequential Profit Gain

Third-quarter net income reached $756 million, or $5.26 a share, as steel operations posted $1.0 billion of operating income.

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (STLD) posted a second consecutive sequential rise in consolidated operating income, with the gain accelerating to $306 million, or 44 percent, versus a $162 million, or 30 percent, increase in the prior quarter.

The industrial metals company reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of $6.5 billion and net income of $756 million, or $5.26 a share, compared with $534 million, or $3.69 a share, in the second quarter.

Steel operations generated $1.0 billion of operating income, 43 percent higher than the sequential second-quarter result, after a 30 percent sequential increase in that prior period. The company attributed the gain to record steel shipments of 3.8 million tons and metal-spread expansion as average realized selling prices rose and scrap costs fell.

The average external steel selling price increased $102 sequentially to $1,400 a ton. Average ferrous scrap cost per ton melted decreased $8 sequentially to $404 a ton, reversing a $16 sequential increase to $412 in the second quarter. Energy, non-residential construction, automotive, and industrial sectors led demand.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mark D. Millett said steel prices continued to improve and that the domestic market remained strong on steady demand, low customer inventories, and historically low import levels. He said lead times extended and spot availability tightened across flat-rolled and structural products, and that value-added flat-rolled spreads expanded as coated imports abated.

Steel fabrication operating income was $91 million, higher than $85 million in the second quarter, as shipments rose 18 percent sequentially and improved pricing more than offset higher steel input costs. The order backlog was 50 percent higher than a year ago and extending into the second quarter of 2027. Demand was largely driven by commercial construction, manufacturing, warehouses, data centers, and healthcare.

Metals recycling operating income was $33 million, $15 million lower than sequential earnings, on lower ferrous scrap pricing and metal-spread contraction with steady volume. Average realized ferrous scrap prices declined $15 a gross ton sequentially.

Aluminum operations posted a $26 million operating loss, a 21 percent improvement versus the second quarter, and the platform was EBITDA breakeven. Aluminum flat-rolled sheet shipments were 55,000 metric tons and hot-band production increased to 91,000 metric tons. The company said volumes were less than expected over several weeks because yield losses increased at higher operating speeds from hot-strip mill coolant composition, which has been changed. All three cold mills are now operational; the first of two CASH lines is operating and is expected to ship finished automotive products before year-end, with the second line expected to become operational early in the first quarter of 2027. The company said it expects aluminum volumes and profitability to improve in the fourth quarter of 2026 and throughout 2027 as startup costs subside.

Cash flow from operations was $846 million, versus $428 million in the second quarter. The company invested $150 million in capital projects, paid $76 million in cash dividends, and repurchased $276 million, or one percent, of common stock, maintaining liquidity of $2.4 billion as of September 30, 2026.

Millett said the company remains optimistic regarding the domestic steel and aluminum industries in 2027 and beyond, citing continued investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, and data centers, along with a supportive U.S. trade environment.
