BK Technologies Extended Its Run of Margins Above 50%
BK Technologies reported $3.2 million in second-quarter net income, with a higher tax provision reducing profit despite revenue growth and stable pre-tax earnings.
Public safety communications provider BK Technologies Corporation (BKTI) kept gross margin above 50% for a second consecutive quarter, although revenue growth eased slightly. Gross margin reached 51.9% in the quarter ended June 30, following 51.8% in the opening quarter. The company maintained its full-year targets while continuing to invest in its next multiband radio and software products.
Revenue rose 11% year over year to $23.4 million, following 12% growth in the first quarter. That left the business delivering double-digit sales gains with a modestly slower growth rate. Second-quarter revenue growth reflected strong demand from state and local public safety agencies and continued adoption of its BKR 9000 handheld multiband radio.
The BKR 9000 remained central to the operating story across both quarters. In the first quarter, favorable product mix and continued customer adoption of that radio primarily drove gross-margin expansion. Second-quarter margin then held near the same level.
The margin performance did not translate into higher bottom-line earnings. Second-quarter net income fell from $3.7 million a year earlier, while pre-tax income remained stable at $4.0 million. A $0.6 million year-over-year increase in the income tax provision drove the earnings decline. The tax comparison distinguished the reported profit decline from the quarter's continued revenue growth.
Over the trailing twelve months ended June 30, net income rose 14% to $13.6 million. After-tax free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure, totaled $19.0 million over that same period. Those longer-period results provided context for the quarterly earnings decline, although they covered a different measurement window and did not establish the amount of cash generated in the second quarter alone.
BK Technologies ended June with a record $29.9 million in cash and no debt. Working capital stood at $46.1 million. Chief Executive John Suzuki said the balance sheet gave the company the strength to continue investing in products its customers demanded. The company identified the BKR9500 in-vehicle multiband radio and software solutions as continuing investment priorities under its Vision 2030 strategy.
That product program connected the existing handheld business with the company's next planned hardware offering. The BKR9500 made its public debut in April, and the company reported initial orders from existing customers ahead of Federal Communications Commission approval. BK Technologies described the radio as an extension of its multiband strategy into the mobile radio market. Those initial orders preceded the company's planned customer-delivery period.
Software development accompanied the hardware investment. The company reported successful initial field testing of BKRplay, its patent-pending tethering solution, alongside development of offerings under its BK ONE platform. Suzuki said customer feedback supported the company's view that tethering enhanced first responders' experience when using InteropONE, its push-to-talk-over-cellular service.
For the full year, BK Technologies reiterated revenue guidance of $90 million and a gross-margin target above 50%. Its earnings targets remain above $3.15 a share on a GAAP basis and at $3.55 a share on a non-GAAP adjusted basis. The company said those targets reflect the expensing of engineering costs that had previously been capitalized. The outlook was unchanged from the first-quarter update.
The next hardware milestone remained ahead: the company expects BKR9500 customer deliveries in the first half of 2027. Its earlier timetable called for FCC approval in the second half of 2026, placing regulatory clearance before the planned shipment window.
