Main Street's NAV Gains for a Seventeenth Straight Quarter
Preliminary net asset value is estimated at $34.18 to $34.26 a share as of September 30, 2026, after a $0.30 supplemental dividend.
Main Street Capital Corporation (MAIN) said net asset value per share rose for a seventeenth consecutive quarter, with a preliminary estimate of $34.18 to $34.26 as of September 30, 2026, after a $0.30 supplemental dividend paid in September.
The increase of $0.26 to $0.34 a share, or 0.8% to 1.0%, compared with $33.92 as of June 30, 2026, was primarily attributed to net fair value appreciation on the investment portfolio, including realized and unrealized activity, and the accretive impact of equity issuances, partially offset by total dividends paid in the third quarter in excess of net investment income per share and the net tax provision.
Chief Executive Officer Dwayne L. Hyzak said distributable net investment income before taxes was in line with expectations and prior guidance.
Preliminary third-quarter net investment income is estimated at $0.87 to $0.91 a share, versus $0.97 a share in the second quarter. Distributable net investment income is estimated at $0.94 to $0.98 a share, versus $1.04 a share, and distributable net investment income before taxes at $0.96 to $1.00 a share, versus $1.08 a share.
The principal investment firm, which provides customized debt and equity capital to lower middle market companies and secured debt to private-equity-owned private companies, estimated an annualized return on equity of over 14% for the third quarter, versus 18.9% annualized for the second quarter.
Net fair value appreciation on the portfolio was primarily the result of appreciation on the lower middle market portfolio, the private loan portfolio and other investments, partially offset by depreciation on the middle market portfolio and fair value depreciation of the wholly owned external investment manager.
Investments on non-accrual status comprised 0.9% of the total investment portfolio at fair value and 3.5% at cost as of September 30, 2026.
Deployment slowed in both core strategies. Lower middle market investments totaled $61.5 million, which after repayments, return of invested equity capital and a decrease in cost basis due to a realized loss produced a net decrease of $19.4 million in LMM cost basis. In the second quarter, LMM investments were $99.7 million and the net decrease in cost basis was $30.6 million.
Private loan investments totaled $162.0 million, which after repayments, return of invested equity capital and a decrease in cost basis due to realized losses produced a net decrease of $1.8 million in private loan cost basis. In the second quarter, private loan investments were $238.9 million and the net increase in cost basis was $60.2 million.
As of September 30, 2026, the private loan portfolio included approximately $2.1 billion of investments at cost across 86 unique companies, with 92.6% invested in first lien senior secured debt and 7.4% in equity or other securities.
During the quarter, Main Street Mezzanine Fund, LP, a wholly owned SBIC, received SBA approval to increase borrowing capacity of its SBIC debentures by $75.0 million to $250.0 million. Combined with Main Street Capital III, LP, the company said it has access to $425.0 million of a $475.0 million regulatory maximum for affiliated SBIC funds and expects to maintain SBIC debentures up to that maximum, subject to periodic repayments and borrowings.
Main Street will release full third-quarter results on November 5, 2026, after the close, with a conference call on November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time.
