Black Hills to Serve Google Wyoming Data Center

The utility will supply up to 590 MW of grid-connected power and manage 2.1 GW of third-party resources through a private microgrid.

Black Hills Corp. (BKH) signed definitive agreements to serve a planned Google data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, providing up to 590 MW of grid-connected energy service and managing 2.1 GW of third-party contracted resources through a private microgrid.

The Mountain Plains utility expects contracted returns from the arrangement to contribute to earnings in 2027 and approximately $150 million of net income in 2030.

The structure splits the load between conventional grid service and a separately managed microgrid that pools third-party contracted capacity. Black Hills will operate the microgrid rather than own the full generation stack, a model that lets the company take on a large hyperscale load without committing to a matching build of its own plants.

“We are pleased to support Google’s planned investment in Wyoming while remaining firmly committed to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective service to every customer,” said Linn Evans, president and CEO of Black Hills Corp.

The 590 MW of grid-connected service is the portion Black Hills will deliver through its existing Cheyenne system. The remaining 2.1 GW of third-party contracted resources will sit on the private microgrid that the company will manage for the data center. Together, the two tracks define the full energy package Google is planning to draw in Wyoming.

Black Hills framed the deal as a contribution to earnings rather than a one-time event. Contracted returns are expected to begin contributing in 2027, with the company pointing to approximately $150 million of net income in 2030 as the later-year run rate the contracts are designed to support.

The announcement is another example of regional utilities locking in hyperscale data center load in the Mountain West. Black Hills is taking on both the grid-connected slice and the microgrid management role, with the 2027 earnings contribution and the 2030 net income figure as the financial markers attached to the Cheyenne project.
