Semaglutide: the established benchmark keeps developing

Semaglutide belongs in an obesity pipeline account because new programs must be understood against treatments already available.

Semaglutide belongs in an obesity pipeline account because new programs must be understood against treatments already available. Novo Nordisk's GLP-1 receptor agonist received its original US weight-management approval as Wegovy in June 2021. That regulatory decision is separate from later studies, formulations and indications; a new trial does not make the underlying compound new. FDA original approval account.

The reconstructed development baseline includes STEP 1, a placebo-controlled study of once-weekly injected semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes. Its main weight assessment was at 68 weeks. This is a useful comparator setting for programs recruiting similar participants, but differences in dose escalation, treatment discontinuation and handling of missing data still matter. The current registry record is completed; that describes the study, not the end of the compound's development. STEP 1, NCT03548935.

The next useful account should concern a substantive new indication, formulation, comparative study or regulatory decision. This account has not established a single next milestone covering every semaglutide program. It also does not reproduce the full current prescribing information: safety and eligibility comparisons should use the relevant formulation's current label, rather than assume all GLP-1 products are interchangeable.

Novo's dated corporate cash generation and debt provide funding context in company resources (below). Those resources support a wider portfolio and manufacturing network; they are not a disclosed semaglutide trial budget.

Novo Nordisk — company resources

Novo reported DKK 44.482 billion of cash and DKK 0.500 billion of marketable securities at June 30. Current borrowings were DKK 18.333 billion and noncurrent borrowings DKK 121.794 billion, including lease liabilities. First-half operating cash flow was DKK 79.283 billion. Reported net income was DKK 69.546 billion. Reported and adjusted operating results differ materially because of rebate-provision reversals and impairment charges; they should not be interchanged. Interest cash-flow classifications changed from January 2026, with comparatives adjusted. Financial report published August 4.

About this account

Published September 23, 2026. Company and regulatory disclosures are covered through September 22; trial-registry records were retrieved September 23. Earlier developments are reconstructed from dated primary sources. Registry status, sponsor-reported results and regulatory decisions are distinguished in the account. Company figures retain their reporting periods; corporate cash is not a compound-specific funding commitment.
