Danuglipron: a discontinued program remains part of the obesity story

Danuglipron, Pfizer's PF-06882961, was an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist investigated for weight management.

Danuglipron, Pfizer's PF-06882961, was an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist investigated for weight management. Pfizer discontinued development in April 2025 after reviewing its clinical data and regulatory input. Its announcement described potential drug-induced liver injury in one asymptomatic participant, resolving after treatment stopped. The company did not present that case as proof that every observed liver abnormality was caused by the drug. Pfizer decision, April 14, 2025.

Earlier Phase 2 work in adults with obesity remains in the registry, with weight assessments at 26 or 32 weeks depending on cohort. Its completed status describes that study's conduct; it does not mean that the later program continued toward approval. Keeping the historical trial and subsequent corporate decision together prevents a completed record from being mistaken for an active pipeline asset. NCT04707313.

A separate interaction study was terminated. Its registry reason explicitly links the stop to Pfizer's development decision and states that the study ended before danuglipron administration. It should therefore not be described as a study in which danuglipron caused an observed adverse outcome. NCT06910839.

Danuglipron is included as a discontinued reference, not a currently advancing competitor. There is no next development milestone asserted here. The case illustrates why a compound history needs to retain setbacks and distinguish evidence from one study, a sponsor's program-level decision and a later administrative record.

Pfizer's current company resources (below) describe the corporate owner after discontinuation. They do not imply continuing financial backing for this stopped compound. Large-company cash generation can support a broad research portfolio without ensuring that a particular program survives.

Pfizer — company resources

At June 28, Pfizer reported $0.976 billion of cash and equivalents plus $10.723 billion of short-term investments. Short-term debt, including current maturities, was $2.699 billion, with $60.495 billion of long-term debt. First-half operating cash flow was $3.450 billion. The cash-flow statement's ending cash figure includes restricted cash and is therefore not interchangeable with the unrestricted balance-sheet figure. These corporate resources provide context for etrasimod's owner without assigning a share of them to the medicine. Danuglipron was discontinued; current group liquidity does not imply renewed funding for that program. Form 10-Q filed August 4.
