Performance Food Group Swings Back to Profit Growth as Margins Widen
Performance Food Group (PFGC) reported fourth-quarter net income of $162.3 million, up 23.4% from a year earlier and a reversal from the prior quarter's 28.5% decline.
Performance Food Group (PFGC) reported fourth-quarter net income of $162.3 million, up 23.4% from a year earlier, reversing the 28.5% decline the foodservice distributor posted in the third quarter. Diluted earnings per share followed the same path, rising 22.6% to $1.03 after falling 27.0% the quarter before. The swing came even as case volume growth slowed, underscoring that the quarter's profit recovery rested on pricing and mix rather than higher shipment counts.
Net sales rose 6.4% to $18.0 billion, matching the growth rate posted in the third quarter, but the volume that normally underpins that figure lost momentum. Total case volume growth decelerated to 3.5% from 4.4%, and organic case volume growth slowed more sharply, to 1.8% from 3.7%. Gross profit nonetheless grew 8.3%, up from 6.4% in the prior quarter and outpacing sales growth, pointing to margin expansion that offset the volume slowdown. Overall product cost inflation edged up to about 4.7% from about 4.5%, giving the company some pricing tailwind to work with even as unit growth cooled.
Within that broader deceleration, the Independent Foodservice channel moved in the opposite direction. Case volume growth there accelerated to 8.0% from 7.3%, even as the organic component of that growth slowed to 5.8% from 6.5%. The divergence suggests the channel's headline volume gains increasingly reflect acquisitions rather than same-business growth, a distinction that matters given independent restaurants typically carry higher margins than the company's broader customer base.
Adjusted EBITDA grew 7.4% to $587.5 million, a modest acceleration from 6.6% growth in the third quarter. Adjusted diluted EPS grew 2.6% to $1.59, up from 1.3% growth previously, but that pace remained well behind the 22.6% growth in GAAP diluted EPS, widening the gap between the company's reported and adjusted profit metrics. For the full fiscal year, net sales rose 7.2% to $67.8 billion, gross profit rose 9.1% to $8.1 billion, and Adjusted EBITDA rose 9.2% to $1,929.4 million, while net income grew 5.6% and full-year diluted EPS growth of 5.0% outpaced adjusted EPS growth of 1.6% by a narrower margin than the fourth-quarter comparison implied.
Alongside the results, the company issued full-year fiscal 2027 financial guidance for the first time, citing significant momentum entering the new year, a step beyond the third quarter's language of merely tightening its fiscal 2026 outlook. Between the two quarterly releases, the company also disclosed plans to offer $1.06 billion of senior notes due 2034 to redeem its existing 5.500% senior notes due 2027, a refinancing move that extends its debt maturity profile ahead of the new fiscal year.
The most recent filing, dated August 20, 2026, contained no financial or operating metrics. It disclosed a resizing of the board from 14 to 10 directors, four directors not standing for reelection, and the appointment of a new Lead Independent Director, marking a governance-focused disclosure distinct in kind from the three earnings releases that preceded it.
