BioMarin to Buy Alesta Therapeutics in $275 Million Cash Deal
The acquisition aims to expand BioMarin's presence in larger rare disease markets via a potential oral alternative to injectable therapies.
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (BMRN) agreed to acquire Alesta Therapeutics in an all-cash transaction valued at $275 million upfront. The agreement also includes potential subsequent payments of up to $215 million, contingent on the achievement of specific development and regulatory milestones.
The transaction is expected to close this quarter, subject to customary closing conditions.
BioMarin said the acquisition is intended to help the company expand into larger rare disease markets with a medicine designed to address a high unmet need for patients. The company identified the target’s lead candidate, ALE1, as a strong strategic fit for its existing operations.
“ALE1 is a strong strategic fit for BioMarin, bringing a potential oral alternative to the injectable therapies available today for people living with HPP around the world while meaningfully strengthening our early-stage clinical pipeline,” said Alexander Hardy, President and Chief Executive Officer of BioMarin.
The deal follows a series of strategic acquisitions by BioMarin to diversify its rare disease portfolio. In May 2025, the company acquired Inozyme Pharma for approximately $270 million to add a Phase 3 enzyme replacement therapy for ENPP1 deficiency. More recently, BioMarin completed a $4.8 billion acquisition of Amicus Therapeutics in April 2026, which added treatments for Fabry and Pompe diseases to its commercial portfolio.
These prior transactions signal a broader effort by BioMarin to leverage its global commercial footprint and in-house manufacturing to accelerate revenue growth and diversify its clinical pipeline.
