Vista Gold Taps Australian Chief as Mt Todd Project Advances
The gold explorer named a managing director for its Australian unit after burning through $3.2 million in cash during the second quarter.
Vista Gold Corp. (VGZ), a gold exploration company focused on its Mt Todd project in Australia's Northern Territory, appointed Gavin Ferguson as managing director of Vista Gold Australia, filling a position the company had been recruiting for since at least the first quarter of 2026. The hire marks a shift from planning to execution as Vista works to advance the Mt Todd gold project, with Ferguson responsible for delivering it.
The appointment accompanied the opening of a new West Perth office, which opened in the second quarter. Together, the two moves signal Vista is building out its on-the-ground Australian presence after raising $42.0 million in net proceeds through an equity offering in the first quarter.
Cash and cash equivalents stood at $49.5 million at June 30, down from $52.7 million at the end of March, a sequential decline of $3.2 million. The burn rate represents a moderation from the company's pre-offering position; cash had risen sharply from $13.6 million at December 31, 2025, after the capital raise brought in $44.85 million in gross proceeds from the sale of 17,940,000 shares.
The consolidated net loss widened to $3.0 million, or $0.02 a share, in the second quarter, compared with $2.4 million, or $0.02 a share, in the year-earlier period. On a sequential basis, the loss narrowed marginally from $3.1 million in the first quarter, though the per-share figure held steady at $0.02.
A notable change in the second quarter was the absence of the granular technical detail that characterized prior releases. The first quarter had included specific metallurgical testing, geotechnical review, drill programs, and permit modification progress. The second quarter used broader language about "disciplined execution" and "meaningful progress on permitting". The company also dropped the detailed equity-offering disclosure that had been prominent in the first quarter, suggesting the capital raise is no longer a current-period focus.
With Ferguson now in place and a West Perth office operational, Vista appears to be transitioning from a period of capital formation and technical study toward a phase defined by project delivery. The company held roughly $49.5 million in cash at quarter-end, a war chest built from the first-quarter offering, and its operating expenses suggest it has runway to continue advancing Mt Todd through the permitting and development stages. The narrowing of the quarterly loss, even as the company expanded its Australian footprint, indicates Vista is managing its spending as it moves Ferguson into the role charged with shepherding the project forward.
