Nationwide Satellite Mapping for West African Cashew Orchards

A new remote sensing approach uses active learning to map cashew production at a national scale with 94% accuracy.

A new remote sensing framework enables the automatic detection of cashew orchards across an entire country using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. By applying margin-based active learning, the researchers developed a training set that maximizes informativeness while minimizing the number of required data points. This method produced a 2021 cashew map for Guinea-Bissau with 10m spatial resolution and a balanced accuracy of 94.0%.

This shift from regional to nationwide mapping removes a primary data gap for West African agricultural economies. The lack of georeferenced databases for cashew orchards has previously obscured the link between crop expansion and deforestation. A scalable, off-site detection system allows for the monitoring of land-use changes without the need for expensive and slow ground surveys.

Agricultural commodity traders and supply chain managers can use this level of granularity to verify the origin of produce. Precise mapping allows for the identification of unregulated production zones, which helps in auditing sustainability claims and biodiversity loss associated with orchard expansion.

Insurance providers and lenders operating in West African agriculture now have a technical path to verify collateral and assess regional production volumes. The ability to map orchards at a 10m resolution transforms how these firms quantify risk and estimate yield potential across fragmented landscapes.

Government agencies can deploy this tool to formalize the economic structure of the cashew sector. Accurate georeferencing enables better tax collection, more efficient distribution of agricultural subsidies, and a clearer understanding of how production clusters correlate with infrastructure.

The release of these datasets and the mapping methodology creates a blueprint for other high-value tropical crops. If this active learning approach scales to other commodities, the opacity of regional agricultural production in emerging markets will diminish.
