Northern Dynasty Minerals Narrows Net Loss to 15.1 million
The mineral exploration company reported a six-month net loss of 15.1 million Canadian dollars, compared to 52.3 million Canadian dollars for the same period last year.
Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (NAK), a mineral exploration company focused on the Pebble Project in Alaska, reported a net loss of 15.1 million Canadian dollars for the six months ended June 30, 2026. This represents a decrease from the 52.3 million Canadian dollars net loss recorded during the same period in 2025.
The reduction in net loss was driven largely by a shift in the fair value of convertible notes derivatives. The company recorded a loss of 781 thousand Canadian dollars on the change in fair value of these derivatives for the first half of 2026, compared to a 41.6 million Canadian dollars loss in the prior-year period.
Operating expenses for the six months ended June 30, 2026, totaled 14.2 million Canadian dollars, an increase from 10.3 million Canadian dollars in 2025. Exploration and evaluation expenses rose to 4.7 million Canadian dollars from 3.3 million Canadian dollars. Legal, accounting, and audit professional fees also increased, reaching 3.3 million Canadian dollars compared to 1.5 million Canadian dollars in the previous year.
Cash and cash equivalents stood at 53 million Canadian dollars as of June 30, 2026. The company generated 5.2 million Canadian dollars from financing activities during the first half of 2026, primarily through the exercise of share purchase options. This followed a period in 2025 where the company saw 16.5 million Canadian dollars in proceeds from a royalty transaction on mineral property interest.
Despite the improved net loss, the company reported a working capital deficit of 54.5 million Canadian dollars as of June 30, 2026, up from a deficit of 46.1 million Canadian dollars on December 31, 2025. The company attributed this deficit to the recognition of a convertible notes liability and derivative on convertible notes totaling 101.6 million Canadian dollars.
Northern Dynasty said its continuing operations and the recoverability of its mineral property interests depend on the existence of economically recoverable mineral reserves at the Pebble Project and the ability to obtain necessary mining permits. The company has prioritized financial resources for working capital, material expenditures at the Pebble Project, and the funding of legal challenges to a Final Determination.
