Joby Aviation to Acquire Resonant Sciences in $500 Million Defense Deal
The eVTOL maker is building a defense platform by adding classified capabilities and scaled manufacturing through its second acquisition in a year.
Joby Aviation, Inc. (JOBY) agreed to acquire Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million, a deal the electric air-taxi developer said would significantly expand its defense business by adding established programs, classified capabilities and scaled manufacturing operations.
The acquisition creates a scaled defense growth platform that accelerates autonomy and broadens the applications for Joby's propulsion technology. The transaction structure was not disclosed.
"Resonant has built an exceptional business that combines advanced technology, vertically integrated production capabilities and deep customer trust," said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. "The combination will pair Resonant's established capabilities with Joby's globally leading aircraft propulsion technologies, creating a powerful platform for the next phase of Resonant's growth."
The deal marks Joby's second acquisition in roughly a year. In August 2025, the company completed its purchase of Blade Air Mobility's passenger business, gaining an established network of terminals and loyal flyers in New York and Southern Europe to position itself for faster entry into commercial service once its eVTOL aircraft is certified. The Resonant transaction signals a parallel push into government and defense markets, where Joby sees its propulsion and autonomy technologies finding a second commercial channel.
The move fits a broader pattern of defense-technology consolidation. Ondas Holdings (ONDS) has been an active acquirer, snapping up Rotron Aero for its propulsion and unmanned-combat-aerial-vehicle portfolio, Mistral for autonomous air-and-ground solutions aligned with Department of Defense modernization priorities, and 4M Defense and S.P.O. Smart Precision Optics to extend its autonomous-systems reach into subsurface operations and precision electro-optics. Firefly Aerospace (FLY) agreed to pay roughly $855 million for SciTec to add mission-proven defense software analytics and space-domain awareness capabilities, while Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) acquired Ultra Mission Solutions to scale its national-security technology offerings.
The combination will create a powerful platform for Resonant's next phase of growth, pairing the target's vertically integrated production and classified programs with Joby's aircraft propulsion technologies. Closing is subject to customary conditions; the company did not provide an expected close date or detail financing arrangements.
