EPA Exempts Syngenta Corn Protein From Pesticide Tolerance
The Environmental Protection Agency has removed the requirement to establish maximum residue levels for a specific plant-incorporated protectant in corn.
The Environmental Protection Agency has established an exemption from the requirement of a pesticide tolerance for residues of Bacillus thuringiensis eCry1Gb.1Ig protein. This rule eliminates the need to set a maximum permissible level for the protein when used as a plant-incorporated protectant in field, sweet, and pop corn.
Syngenta Seeds, LLC petitioned for the exemption under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The agency granted the request after determining the exemption is safe, meaning there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result from aggregate exposure, including dietary, drinking water, and residential settings.
The rule applies to agricultural producers, food manufacturers, and pesticide manufacturers. Specifically, it affects entities involved in crop production, animal production, and food and pesticide manufacturing.
This regulation became effective on August 7, 2026. Parties wishing to file objections or requests for hearings must do so by October 6, 2026.
