Embecta Raises Profit Outlook After Rebound From March Slump

Embecta raised its adjusted earnings forecast to $1.80 to $1.90 a share for fiscal 2026 while holding its reported revenue guidance steady.

Embecta Corp. (EMBC), a global diabetes care company, raised its full-year guidance ranges for adjusted operating margin and adjusted earnings a share after a sequential recovery in its June quarter. The increase followed May’s cuts to profitability guidance, while the company reaffirmed its revenue range. Revenue increased approximately $50 million from the March quarter. The company attributed the improvement to better U.S. and international performance and a contribution from Owen Mumford, whose acquisition closed midway through the quarter.

The change followed an uneven progression through the fiscal year. Embecta maintained its outlook after December-quarter results that management said largely met expectations, then cut its forecast after the March quarter fell significantly short. The June recovery did not restore year-over-year growth: third-quarter revenue was $271.7 million, down 8.1%. The renewed profit forecast therefore accompanied a business still reporting lower sales.

The U.S. business remained the main geographic weakness. Revenue there fell 24.6% to $120.8 million, while international revenue totaled $150.9 million, making international the larger of the two businesses during the quarter. In May, Chief Executive Devdatt Kurdikar attributed the U.S. setback to increased competition and softness in overall market volumes; the June release described a sequential improvement in both geographies.

Owen Mumford contributed $13.8 million, while currency translation added $2.5 million. Those offsets partly cushioned the sales decline, leaving the acquisition as a contributor to the quarter alongside the improvement in the existing businesses.

Pen needles remained the largest product family, with quarterly revenue of $177.5 million. Syringes generated $36.6 million and safety products $36.7 million. Other products, a category that included Owen Mumford products, swabs and accessories, accounted for $15.6 million, while contract manufacturing contributed $5.3 million. The product mix remained centered on pen needles even after the acquisition added sales to the broader portfolio.

Profitability remained below the prior-year quarter. Gross margin narrowed to 56.4% from 66.7%, and reported operating income was $48.7 million. Net income totaled $21.1 million, or $0.36 a share. The year-over-year margin contraction provided a counterpoint to the sequential recovery.

Adjusted operating income reached $69.4 million, approximately $21 million above the March quarter, and adjusted earnings were $0.56 a share. Embecta’s reconciliation included $9.8 million of acquisition-related costs and $5.5 million of one-time stand-up costs. The latter category included registration, labeling, brand transition, distribution setup and other costs associated with establishing the company’s operations.

For fiscal 2026, adjusted earnings guidance is $1.80 to $1.90 a share, against the previous range of $1.55 to $1.75. Adjusted operating margin guidance is 23.50% to 24.00%. Kurdikar said the higher profitability ranges reflected year-to-date performance.

The revenue outlook carries a less favorable underlying signal. Reported sales guidance remains $1.015 billion to $1.035 billion, but the company now expects an adjusted organic constant-currency decline of 8.8% to 10.2%, against its previous forecast of an 8.3% to 10.2% decline. The revised range lowered the best outcome anticipated for sales excluding currency and acquisition effects.

Embecta also repaid approximately $53 million of debt during the quarter and repurchased approximately $9 million of shares under the program authorized in May. At June’s end, cash, equivalents and restricted cash totaled $218.2 million, while debt principal outstanding was $1.469 billion. The repayments followed borrowing to fund Owen Mumford.

The portfolio expansion also extended into drug-delivery partnerships. Generic GLP-1 therapies packaged with Embecta pen needles launched in Canada and Brazil, following an initial launch in India. The company expects a U.S. launch of a small-pack GLP-1 format in its fiscal fourth quarter, placing another product introduction within the remaining months of its annual outlook.
