Definium Loss Widens as Drug Spending Accelerates
Cash and investments reached about $1.1 billion after an upsized share offering.
Definium Therapeutics (DFTX), the clinical-stage drug developer, reported a wider second-quarter loss as spending increased on its lead depression treatment and commercial preparations.
The quarter marked an acceleration in investment after the Emerge Phase 3 program met its primary and all key secondary endpoints. DT120 produced placebo-adjusted improvements on a depression-rating scale of 8.1 points at Week 6 and 7.3 points at Week 12, both with p-values below 0.0001.
The net loss widened to $159.0 million from $42.7 million a year earlier. An $86.2 million noncash increase in warrant-liability fair value, tied to appreciation in Definium’s share price, accounted for much of the change.
Operating expenses rose to $75.1 million from $40.9 million a year earlier and accelerated from an implied $59.2 million in the first quarter. Research-and-development expense increased to $48.7 million from $29.8 million, driven chiefly by $12.9 million in additional DT120 costs and $5.7 million in higher personnel costs. R&D spending also rose from an implied $41.5 million in the first quarter.
General-and-administrative expense more than doubled to $26.4 million from $11.1 million and climbed from an implied $17.7 million in the preceding quarter. The year-over-year increase included $7.6 million in additional stock-based compensation and $1.8 million in commercial-preparedness spending.
Definium's cash position provides an operating runway into 2030. The company completed an offering of about 23.7 million shares for $805 million in gross proceeds and $757.9 million in net proceeds, exceeding its earlier proposal for a $500 million sale with a potential $75 million underwriter option. Common shares outstanding increased to 134.4 million from 98.8 million at the end of 2024.
The company also completed enrollment in two additional studies, with Voyage results expected in August 2026 and Panorama results expected in September. Ascend began enrollment toward roughly 165 participants and a planned 2027 readout, leaving the next two clinical updates as the near-term tests of Definium’s expanded investment.
