Gladstone Capital Grows Portfolio as Income Slips
Net investment income fell 7.0% to $0.49 a share even as Gladstone Capital pushed net asset value to $21.50 and ramped new originations to $41.9 million.
Gladstone Capital (GLAD) reported net investment income of $11.005 million, or $0.49 a share, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, down 7.0% from $11.838 million, or $0.52 a share, in the prior quarter. The business development company's total increase in net assets from operations fell 14.2% to $13.270 million, or $0.59 a share, from $15.459 million, or $0.68 a share.
The decline traced mostly to a comparison against an unusually strong prior period rather than any deterioration in the underlying loan book. Total other income dropped 92.8% to $201,000 from $2.796 million, because a one-time dividend and prepayment fee that boosted the March quarter did not recur. Total interest income, by contrast, kept climbing, rising 4.7% to $24.294 million as the weighted average interest-bearing portfolio grew 3.6% to $822.4 million and the yield on those investments held at 11.8%.
Expenses moved the other direction, falling 4.7% to $13.490 million from $14.154 million on lower base management and incentive fees, even as interest expense rose $0.6 million. Interest expense on the Credit Facility alone climbed $0.3 million on a $22.3 million increase in the weighted average balance outstanding tied to new deal activity, and in June 2026 the company closed $60.0 million of 7% notes due December 2029, a move that also added $0.3 million to notes payable interest expense while expanding Bank Line availability to more than $170 million.
That new financing capacity coincided with a pickup in deployment. Total investments made nearly doubled to $82.090 million from $43.560 million, while repayments and net proceeds slipped 13.1% to $40.226 million, producing net originations of $41.9 million after a quarter in which the portfolio had shrunk. Total investments at fair value grew 5.1% to $953.326 million, and net asset value per share rose 0.7% to $21.50 from $21.36.
Portfolio marks were mixed. Net unrealized appreciation narrowed 36.9% to $3.014 million from $4.779 million, and a net realized loss shrank to $20,000 from $570,000. Gladstone Capital also disclosed five non-earning investments totaling $26.7 million, or 3.1% of debt investments at fair value, a new item flagged this quarter as a portfolio-quality concern.
Subsequent to quarter-end, the company refinanced its Pan-Am Dental debt investment in July 2026, repaying $23.0 million at par and putting $25.7 million into a new first-lien loan plus additional equity. It also collected a payoff on its Imperative Holdings Corporation investment, generating a net realized gain on the common equity stake alongside $11.0 million of debt repaid at par.
Gladstone Capital held its monthly cash distribution at $0.45 a share for the quarter, unchanged from the prior period. With NAV rising and new capital in hand from the note issuance, the company enters the current quarter with room to keep expanding the portfolio even as the income comparisons normalize off the prior quarter's one-time boost.
