Quantum Computing: Scaling Hardware and Securing Assets
Companies are pivoting toward hybrid architectures and quantum-safe security as the industry chases the threshold of quantum advantage.
IonQ sold its first 6th-generation, chip-based, 256-qubit system, anchored by a secure quantum network and a broad IP-generation partnership. The company reported first-quarter 2026 GAAP revenues of $64.7 million, a 755% year-on-year increase.
Infrastructure is shifting toward hybrid models to bridge the gap to full quantum utility. Infission is integrating its Sqale quantum computers with NVIDIA’s GPU-accelerated systems via NVQLink to enable real-time hybrid quantum–classical computing. D-Wave is similarly utilizing quantum-classical hybrid solutions to provide optimal answers for customer problems.
Achieving "quantum advantage" remains a primary but elusive milestone. Rigetti acknowledges that no current quantum computers, including its own hardware, have reached quantum advantage or Logical Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (LFTQC). Infission is targeting 100 logical qubits by 2028 to reach the threshold for commercially valuable applications, though it has not yet validated a high-volume manufacturing process.
Security disclosures have hardened around the threat of quantum decryption. Quantum eMotion developed the Qastle Quantum-Safe Hot Wallet to secure digital assets against quantum computing risks. The company also integrated its Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) technology into the Kirq quantum communication testbed.
Market specialization is diversifying into industrial and niche applications. Lode is focusing its quantum intellectual property on mining, battery, and carbon capture fields. Quantum Computing Inc. is emphasizing hardware for quantum authentication and random number generation, alongside reservoir computers for directed AI.
Software compatibility is emerging as a strategic risk. Quantum Circuits is designing its development platform to be compatible with most major software languages to avoid a scenario where a competitor's proprietary toolset limits hardware usage. D-Wave warned that if customers wait for broad quantum advantage to be reached, it could impair business growth.
