Entegris Posts Third Straight Beat as Growth Broadens

Entegris reported second-quarter net sales of $883.2 million, up 11.5% from a year earlier and ahead of its own guidance for a third consecutive quarter.

Entegris (ENTG) reported second-quarter net sales of $883.2 million, up 11.5% from $792.4 million a year earlier and up 8.8% from $811.9 million in the first quarter.

The increase marked a clear acceleration from the 5% year-over-year growth posted in the first quarter and a reversal from the year-over-year decline recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023, when net sales were $849.8 million. Chief Executive commentary shifted alongside the numbers: where the first quarter was described as delivering "solid results" on "unit-driven volumes," the second quarter was characterized as "double-digit growth across both our unit and capex-related businesses," pointing to a broadening of demand beyond replacement-driven unit volumes to capital-investment-linked spending.

GAAP diluted earnings per share more than doubled from a year earlier to $0.61, up from $0.35, as net income rose 77.3% to $93.6 million. Sequential growth was more modest, with earnings per share up from $0.60 and net income up from $92.0 million in the first quarter. Profitability metrics improved in tandem: gross margin expanded to 47.6% from 44.4% a year earlier and 46.9% in the prior quarter, while GAAP operating margin reached 18.6%, up from 13.4% a year ago, marking a third consecutive quarter of sequential margin expansion from 12.7% in the fourth quarter of 2023 to 17.4% in the first quarter to 18.6% in the second. Adjusted EBITDA margin rose to 28.4% of sales from 27.3% a year earlier.

The Advanced Purity Solutions segment drove most of the improvement. Segment profit more than doubled year over year to $150.9 million from $95.9 million, on net sales growth of 17.0% to $514.6 million. The Materials Solutions segment grew more slowly, with net sales up 4.6% to $371.3 million and segment profit up to $77.7 million from $72.5 million.

The non-GAAP reconciliation for the quarter included a $6.7 million equity investment impairment charge that had not appeared in the first-quarter or fourth-quarter reconciliations. Restructuring costs tied to the wind-down of the Life Sciences Fluid Management business and an internal reorganization combining two divisions fell to $5.6 million from $13.3 million a year earlier, though they rose from $4.1 million in the first quarter.

Entegris guided third-quarter net sales to a range of $905 million to $935 million, continuing a pattern of raised guidance that has followed each of the past two quarters' results above the company's own forecasts: the second-quarter guide of $815 million to $845 million was topped by the $883.2 million actual, and the first-quarter guide of $785 million to $825 million was topped by $811.9 million in actual sales. Non-GAAP earnings-per-share guidance for the third quarter of $0.96 to $1.04 sits above the second quarter's actual $0.93 and well above the $0.76 to $0.84 range the company had set for the second quarter back when it issued first-quarter results.

Cash used in financing activities swung to $208.5 million from $17.8 million a year earlier, driven by $200 million of debt repayment with no offsetting debt issuance, compared with $327 million issued and repaid in the same period last year. Cash and equivalents fell $89.1 million sequentially to $353.6 million.
