Boise Cascade sales rise as plywood prices boost wood products
The company reported consolidated sales of $1.83 billion for the second quarter, a 5% increase from the prior year.
Boise Cascade (BCC) reported consolidated sales of $1.83 billion for the second quarter, a 5% increase from the $1.74 billion recorded in the same period last year. The building products company saw a divergence between its top-line growth and bottom-line results, as net income decreased 7% to $57.3 million from $62.0 million a year ago.
Adjusted EBITDA rose 6% to $126.2 million from $119.0 million in the prior-year quarter. The result reflects a period of mixed performance across its primary business segments, where pricing gains in wood products were offset by rising operational costs in distribution.
Sales in the Building Materials Distribution segment increased 5% to $1.70 billion. This growth was driven by a 4% increase in net sales volume and a 1% increase in net sales price. However, segment income fell 10% to $70.1 million from $78.0 million, as the company faced $10.8 million in higher selling and distribution expenses and $1.7 million in higher depreciation and amortization.
Wood Products segment income rose 84% to $25.7 million from $14.0 million. Sales for the segment increased 3% to $459.6 million, driven by higher plywood prices and volumes. Average net selling prices for plywood increased 15% compared to the second quarter of 2024 and rose 15% sequentially from the first quarter of 2025.
Lower per-unit OSB costs also contributed to the Wood Products gain, though the result was partially offset by declines in engineered wood products. LVL prices fell 4% and I-joist prices fell 7% compared to the prior year.
Boise Cascade projected total company adjusted EBITDA between $82 million and $114 million for the third quarter. Capital expenditures for 2025 are expected to total between $150 million and $170 million, excluding potential acquisitions.
On July 31, 2025, the company entered an expanded partnership with James Hardie. Boise Cascade became the sole nationwide distributor for the James Hardie portfolio, which includes AZEK and TimberTech products.
