Wave Loss Widens as Trial Programs Advance
The biotechnology company ended June with $490.6 million in cash and investments.
Wave Life Sciences (WVE), a clinical-stage biotechnology company, reported a wider second-quarter net loss as revenue fell and spending increased while several drug programs advanced.
The quarter marked a sharp reversal from the first three months of 2026, when higher revenue had helped limit the net loss to about $26.1 million. The latest loss widened to $69.4 million from $50.5 million a year earlier, while the loss per share increased to $0.34 from $0.31.
Revenue declined 74% to $2.3 million from $8.7 million a year earlier and dropped from about $38.2 million in the first quarter. Operating loss widened to $73.8 million from $52.8 million a year earlier as lower revenue coincided with higher expenses.
Research-and-development expense rose 18% to $51.3 million, reflecting the company's expanding clinical work, while general-and-administrative expense increased 38% to $24.8 million. Both categories also rose sequentially.
Wave began dosing the Phase 2a multidose portion of its WVE-007 INLIGHT obesity trial after the Food and Drug Administration accepted the study plan earlier in the year. Phase 2 trials studying WVE-007 in combination with incretin therapy and as post-incretin maintenance are planned to start in the second half of 2026.
The company also completed enrollment and dosing across the 200-milligram, 400-milligram and 600-milligram cohorts of its RestorAATion-2 study. Data from the monthly multidose 600-milligram cohort are expected in the second half of 2026.
The FDA granted a meeting request to discuss a potential accelerated-approval pathway for WVE-006 and scheduled the meeting for the end of summer. The company also expects to file a clinical-trial application for WVE-008 in the second half of the year.
Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities declined from $544.6 million at the end of March and $602.1 million at year-end. Wave maintained its projection that existing resources will fund operations into the third quarter of 2028, extending through the planned regulatory and clinical milestones.
