EnerSys Approves Defense-Focused Lithium-Cell Plant
The Greenville, S.C., project calls for about $500 million of net investment.
EnerSys (ENS), the energy-storage company, approved a plan for a U.S. lithium-cell facility focused on aerospace, defense and specialized industrial applications.
The board’s approval advanced a strategic shift toward customers requiring a secure domestic supply chain. Demand from those applications is expected to be incremental to its existing business.
The Greenville, S.C., facility is planned to begin with approximately 1 gigawatt hour of annual production capacity.
EnerSys expects a revised Energy Department grant of approximately $150 million to support the project. Previously awarded state and local incentives are valued at approximately $200 million.
The facility update followed EnerSys’ segment realignment, which created Precision Power Solutions to house its aerospace, defense and specialized-products operations separately.
The new structure gave investors greater visibility into that fast-growing business, while the approved development plan established a domestic manufacturing base tailored to its targeted applications.
