CSX Revenue Hits Record $3.94 Billion as Volume Accelerates

The transportation company reported a 10% year-over-year increase in revenue for the second quarter of 2026.

CSX (CSX) reported record second-quarter revenue of $3.94 billion.

The results marked a sharp inflection in the company's growth trajectory. Revenue rose 10% year-over-year, accelerating from a 2% increase in the first quarter of 2026 and a 1% decrease in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Diluted earnings per share rose 23% year-over-year to $0.54. This followed a period of lower profitability, with earnings of $0.43 a share in the first quarter of 2026 and $0.39 a share in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Operating income grew 17% year-over-year to $1.51 billion. Operating margin expanded 240 basis points to 38.3%, up from 31.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 30.3% in the third quarter of 2025.

Total volume increased 6% year-over-year to 1.68 million units. This growth rate accelerated from a 3% increase in the first quarter of 2026 and a 1% increase in the third quarter of 2025.

Intermodal growth led the volume increases with a 9% rise. This continued a growth trend for the intermodal segment that began in the third quarter of 2025.

Prior periods were impacted by one-time costs. The company recorded $50 million in severance and technology rationalization expenses in the fourth quarter of 2025 and a $164 million non-cash goodwill impairment charge in the third quarter of 2025.

CSX appointed Kevin Boone as executive vice president and chief financial officer and Maryclare Kenney as senior vice president and chief commercial officer in October 2025.
